The CEO's Regret: His Lost Wife's Secret Twins novel Chapter 55

Chapter 55

The stack of reports on my desk blurred together. I blinked hard, trying to focus on the numbers that kept swimming across the page. Three days. Three days of this special hell Blake had crafted just for me. I knew this was his revenge.

My colleagues had gotten the memo loud and clear. The CEO’s assistant was fair game now. They dumped their work on me, scheduled meetings at impossible times, and conveniently forgot to include me in important emails. Whatever invisible protection I’d had as Blake’s personal assistant had evaporated.

My spine screamed as I shifted in my chair. The old injury from that fall from the tree years ago had been dormant for so long, I’d almost forgotten about it. Now it burned constantly, a reminder with every movement that my body wasn’t meant to work twenty-hour days.

God, when had I last been home? Tuesday? Monday? The days melted together when you caught two-hour naps on your desk between

assignments.

At least I didn’t have to see Blake and Emma playing house. Small mercies, right?

My phone buzzed. Blake’s assistant.

“Mr. Morgan needs the quarterly projections delivered in person. His car’s downstairs waiting.” His tone was clipped, professional.

Of course he did. Because email was apparently too modern for Blake Morgan.

The leather seats were too comfortable. Fatal mistake. My eyes drifted shut, the file clutched against my chest. Just five minutes. Just

five…

I jolted awake to unfamiliar scenery rolling past the window. Not the city. Trees. Lots of trees.

No. No, no, no.

“Hey, where are we headed?” My voice came out hoarse.

The driver glanced at me through the rearview mirror. “Grant estate, Mrs. Morgan. Direct orders from your husband.”

My stomach dropped. The Grant estate. Where Emma was staying. Where my mother was playing happy family with the Grants while her actual daughter worked herself to death.

“You need to turn this car around. Right now.”

‘Can’t do that, ma’am. Mr. Morgan made it real clear where you needed to be.” He kept his eyes on the road.

Of course he was.

The estate looked exactly as pretentious as I remembered. All that old money gleaming in the afternoon sun. Mr. and Mrs. Grant’s car

wasn’t in the driveway.

But there were other cars. Lots of them.

My feet had barely touched the gravel when I heard the laughter. Emma’s tinkling laugh, followed by a chorus of others. A party. She was

throwing a party.

I turned back toward the car, but the driver was already pulling away.

Shit.

“Planning to run away again?”

Blake’s voice cut through the air. He stepped out from behind one of the decorative pillars, looking immaculate as always in his charcoal

suit.

“I’m heading back to the office. Those reports won’t finish themselves.” I didn’t turn around.

“You’ll stay exactly where you are. I didn’t bring you here to watch you leave.” He moved closer, his footsteps crunching on the gravel.

I spun on my heel. ‘You can’t just-

“Don’t move.” His voice dropped to ice. “Not one step.”

My body betrayed me, freezing at his command. Three years of marriage had trained me well.

Emma appeared moments later, a vision in a white sundress that screamed expensive. Her smile was so bright it could have powered the

city.

“Aria! You actually showed up! She pressed her hands together. “I was so worried after last time. Blake mentioned inviting you, and I thought maybe you’d still be angry.”

I looked between them, confusion mixing with exhaustion. “Angry about what exactly?”

“He didn’t fill you in?” She gave Blake a teasing look. “You really are terrible with the important stuff.”

Blake’s expression remained carved from stone.

Emma slipped her arm through his, pressing close against his side. “Today’s the big reveal of my new studio! Blake designed every inch of it himself. Can you believe the detail work?”
