Chapter 29
“What happens when you don’t need saving?”
“You’re not interesting anymore.” I touched my belly. “There’s something else. Worse than Bella.”
“What?”
I hesitated. Saying it made it real.
‘David’s become really controlling about the pregnancy. He doesn’t want me working. He monitors everything-what I eat, how much I
sleep, where I go. Last week he tried to stop me from going to a board meeting at my own company.”
Aria’s face darkened. “That’s not okay.”
“He says he’s protecting me and the baby. But it feels like…” I searched for words. “Like I’m in a cage.”
“I know what you mean,” Aria said quietly.
My phone buzzed.
David: [Bella’s really upset. Taking her to dinner. Don’t wait up.]
I stared at the message. Something inside me cracked.
“He’s taking her to dinner,” I said. “While I’m pregnant with his child, he’s taking his cousin to dinner.”
Aria’s phone buzzed. She tensed.
‘Blake?’ I guessed.
She nodded, scrolling through messages. Her face shifted from tense to angry to despairing.
“What did he say?”
She set the phone down carefully. “He wants to know where I am. Why I left without telling him. She looked at me with hollow eyes.
“He’s tracking me. Through my phone. He knows exactly where I am.”
A chill went through me. “That’s-
“Normal for Blake. He’s always monitored me. Where I go, who I see, what I spend. He says it’s for security.”
I thought about David’s behavior. The controlling. The overprotectiveness. Making decisions without asking me.

Chapter 29
It wasn’t the same as Blake. Not even close.
But it was on the same spectrum.
Control disguised as care.
“We’re both in cages,’ I said. “Just different kinds.”
Aria looked at me, then nodded. ‘At least we see it now.”
Her phone buzzed again. Then again. Blake was bombarding her.
‘I should respond,” she said.
“Or you could not. Make him wonder.”
A ghost of a smile. “Easy for you to say. You don’t live with Blake Morgan.”
“No, I live with David Coleman. Who’s probably telling Bella about his ‘difficult’ wife right now.”
We looked at each other and laughed. Not happy laughter. The exhausted kind.
I remembered us at eight years old. We’d made a pact in the Grant estate garden. Pricked our fingers with a rose thorn and pressed them together. Blood sisters, we’d called ourselves. We’d promised to always protect each other.
Then my father died in that accident. Everything changed.
I’d blamed Aria’s father. Blamed Aria. Stopped taking her calls. Let her face Christine alone.
‘I’m sorry,” I said suddenly. “For those years after the accident. I should have-
‘Don’t.” Aria’s voice was firm. ‘We’re past that.”
“Are we?’
“We’re sitting here together, aren’t we?’ She squeezed my hand. “That’s enough.”
‘I need to tell you something,” Aria said. “About my mother.”
I straightened. “Christine? What about her?”
Aria’s hands clenched. “Last week, I caught her trying to disconnect my father’s life support.”

(I highly recommend a captivating book that I couldn’t put down for three days and nights. It’s incredibly engaging and a must-read. The title of the book is “The Glory of the Female Knight’ You can find it by searching for it in the search bar.)
(I am a duke’s daughter. Three years ago, I married the captain of the knights’ order amidst everyone’s blessings, when he passionately promised to love only me for life. However, upon his return from three years of southern campaigns, he wants to take the Empire’s first
female knight commander as his wife.
They say this is true love, that even His Majesty the King has made an exception to approve it. They want me to be an understanding
wife, to continue managing family affairs and caring for his mother-essentially treating me like a servant.
Ridiculous! I am a duke’s daughter, my father’s blood flows through my veins, and I never bow to oppression!
When I saw them making love in the glass conservatory where my father once planted tulips for me, when I heard my mother-in-law tell me to please other men for the family’s benefit, when I faced the sword point of my husband’s mistress, I finally understood-
I don’t need this kind of marriage, this kind of future!
I want a divorce, I want to return to my family, I want to become a brave and skilled female knight! To restore my family’s glory!)
