Chapter 212

Thunder rumbles across the sky as my black Mercedes cuts through the abandoned industrial zone outside New York. Rain pounds against
the windows. I watch the deserted warehouses passing by, knowing exactly what waits inside one of them.
“We’re here, sir,” my driver announces, pulling up to a rusted metal structure.
“Wait in the car. I step out, letting the rain soak my suit.
Jack meets me at the entrance, shifting nervously from foot to foot. “He’s inside, Mr. Morgan. Been here since midnight.”
“Has he talked?”
“Keeps insisting he told you everything three years ago.”
I push open the heavy metal door. The air reeks of dust and fear. In the center of the empty space, under a single flickering bulb, sits a thin man in his thirties. His wrists bound behind his back, head hanging low.
When the door slams shut, his head jerks up. His eyes widen when he sees me.
“P-please,” he stutters, voice breaking. “Mr. Morgan, I don’t know why I’m here.”
I walk toward him slowly. Three years ago, this programmer helped destroy everything that mattered to me. Now he sits trembling, sweat
staining his shirt, thinning hair plastered to his forehead.
“Get him up, I tell Jack.
The programmer attempts a smile, lips quivering. “Mo-Morgan sir… whatever this is about, we should discuss it at the office. This place-
Two security guards yank him from the chair and throw him at my feet. He lands hard, face scraping against concrete. I place my shoe on
the side of his head, applying just enough pressure to keep him still.
“Three years ago, I say, voice echoing against the bare walls, “I ordered you to retrieve surveillance footage from Redwood Medical Center
on the day Aaron died.”
“Y-yes, and I did! I found exactly what you wanted!”
I remove my foot and step back. “Continue,” I tell Jack.

Jack steps forward. The footage showed Christine entering the hospital at 2:17 PM and leaving at 3:46 PM that day.”
“That’s what I found! I swear it!”
And you personally verified the footage? Checked for tampering? Confirmed authenticity?”
“I’m a professional! I wouldn’t-
Jack’s boot slams into his ribs. The programmer curls into himself, gasping.
“Try again, Jack demands, standing over him.
Thunder crashes outside, shaking the warehouse walls.
“I… I did what I was asked,” the programmer wheezes, clutching his side.
I move closer, crouching down to bring my face near his. “The last person who lied to me now eats through a tube. This is your final
opportunity for honesty.”
His eyes grow wider as muffled screams reach us from the adjacent room.
“Mr. Morgan, I’m just a programmer! Why would I lie to you? I found what I found-Christine was there!”
I stand up, disappointment hardening into resolve. “Bring in Duke.”
Jack nods and walks to a side door. When it opens, the programmer’s mouth falls open. A massive pit bull strains against its thick chain,
muscles rippling beneath its scarred coat.
‘Duke gets very aggressive when hungry,” I state, watching terror spread across the programmer’s face.
“Wait! Please! What do you want me to say?!”
“The truth. About the surveillance footage. About who actually visited the hospital that day.”
He shakes his head frantically. “I told you everything! Christine was there!”
I give Jack a slight nod. He releases the chain.
Duke charges forward, jaws clamping onto the programmer’s thigh. His scream pierces the air as the dog tears away a chunk of flesh. Blood splatters across the concrete floor.
“STOP! PLEASE STOP!” He thrashes wildly, trying to escape, but Duke pursues relentlessly.
I watch, expression unchanged, as Duke attacks again, teeth sinking into the programmer’s arm. The man howls in agony, rolling across

the floor, leaving a smear of blood.
“Mr. Morgan, please! I’ll tell you anything! Make it stop!” he shrieks as Duke circles for another attack.
I snap my fingers. Jack grabs Duke’s collar, pulling the animal back. The dog continues snarling, blood dripping from its muzzle.
The programmer sobs uncontrollably, clutching his mangled limbs. “The footage… it wasn’t real. I was paid to alter it.”
‘Go on.”
“A man approached me before you sent Jack with your request. Offered me $250,000 to modify the footage… to make it show Christine
entering and leaving when she never did.”
My jaw tightens. “A man? Not a woman?”
“Yes! Definitely a man! Well-dressed, scholarly-looking with gold-rimmed glasses. Very polite, very precise with his instructions.”
“And the original footage? Who actually visited the hospital during those hours?”
“I never saw it! I swear! I just replaced segments with pre-recorded footage of Christine from her previous hospital visits. I deleted the
original after the transfer.”
Rage builds inside me as I process this information. “So Christine never went to the hospital that day?”
“No, sir. I gave Jack exactly what I was paid to create.”
Three years of ignoring Aria when she told me she’d seen Emma at the hospital. Three years of a broken marriage because I chose to
believe fabricated evidence over my own wife
‘Please,” the programmer begs, blood pooling beneath him. “I can help fix this now. I might recover backup files from the hospital archives. Most security systems maintain redundant copies.”
I stare down at him-this weak man who took money to help destroy my family, ‘I don’t give second chances to traitors.”
“But I can make this right! Please!”
I turn toward the door. “Duke hasn’t finished eating.”
“Wait! Why? I told you everything!”
I pause without turning. “Your deception cost me three years. Three years I can never get back. Because of you, I lost her.”
“I’m begging you-

If Duke gets full before you die, Jack will call an ambulance. If not…” I exhale slowly. “Either way, you’ll spend whatever life you have left dragging yourself around on crutches.
His desperate screams follow me as I exit, accompanied by sounds of renewed growling and tearing flesh. Outside, rain pours down in
sheets, drenching me completely.
In the car, I pull out my phone and call Jack. “When you finish, come to the office. We’re restarting the investigation from scratch. Every camera, every witness, every minute of that day needs documenting. Keep the team isolated-no outside communication until we have
conclusive results.
“Yes, sir. And when we identify who actually visited the hospital?”
“Then they answer to me.”
