Chapter 20
BLAKE
77
The whiskey burned going down, but not as much as the rage burning in my chest. I sat in my study, staring at the amber liquid in my crystal tumbler. The ice clinked against the glass as my hand shook slightly. One
hour. I’d waited one hour at that law office for a woman who never showed.
An entire goddamn hour. Sixty minutes of lawyers whispering, pitying me. Blake Morgan, stood up by his
own wife.
The humiliation.
The lawyers had tried to be polite about it. “Perhaps Mrs. Morgan had an emergency.” But I saw it in their eyes. The pity. The assumption that my wife was playing me.
The door opened. Aria walked in.
My breath caught. Even disheveled, even with her face pale and drawn, she was still- No. I shoved that
thought down hard.
Her white blouse was wrinkled, stained. Her hair fell loose around her shoulders. Those green eyes met
mine, wide and trembling. Her lips parted.
I didn’t let her speak.
The whiskey flew from my hand. It splashed across her face, her neck, soaking into that white blouse. The fabric went transparent, clinging to her skin. The crystal tumbler shattered against the wall behind her.
“Aria Taylor.” My voice came out low, dangerous. “You begged for this divorce. Pushed and pushed. Then you
pull this crap?”
She stood there dripping, whiskey running down her throat, disappearing beneath her collar. I watched the liquid trail over her collarbone. Watched her chest rise and fall with quick, shallow breaths.
Damn it. Even furious, even wanting to break something, I couldn’t stop noticing her body.

Chapter 20
Three years. Three years of sharing a bed, of watching her move through my house, of wanting her and
hating myself for it.

“How dare you stand me up?” I kept my voice steady. Pushed down the heat building in my gut. “My time is
valuable. Too valuable to waste on you.”
Her hands shook as she wiped whiskey from her face. Her fingers trembled. The scent filled the room-
sharp, bitter, mixing with whatever perfume she wore.
“Mr. Morgan, you have every right to be angry.” Her voice cracked. Small. Broken. “Could we reschedule for
tomorrow?”
I laughed. The sound came out harsh, ugly.
“You think I have nothing better to do than chase you around?”
“That’s not what I-”
“Save it. I know exactly what you’re doing.” I stood, moved closer. She was so damn small. I towered over her, close enough to see whiskey droplets caught in her eyelashes. Close enough to smell her skin beneath
the alcohol.
“You never wanted the divorce. Otherwise you wouldn’t have run away at the crucial moment.”
“Blake, please-
Something in the way she said my name made my chest tight. Made me want to grab her, shake her, make her explain why she tortured me. Or kiss her. Pin her against that wall and-
No.
“When I want a divorce, my lawyers will handle it. You had your shot today. You blew it.” I turned back to my desk. If I kept looking at her, kept smelling her, I’d do something I’d regret, “Get out.”
She didn’t move. Just stood there soaked in whiskey, staring at me. Something flickered in those green eyes.
Pain. Or maybe something deeper.
My fingers ached to touch her. To hurt her. To claim her.

‘I said get out.”
Finally, she turned and left. The door clicked shut.
The silence pressed in. I poured another drink with shaking hands.

My phone buzzed. Emma’s name lit up the screen. I let it ring. Once. Twice. Three times. Then answered, my
voice still rough with anger and something else I didn’t want to name.
