*Cut myself during a dressing change,’ he explained, wincing dramatically when I barely touched near the bandage. “The scissors slipped

because it hurt too much.”

I couldn’t help rolling my eyes. “Seriously? You’re a grown-ass man running a medical center. You can’t handle a little pain?”

Matthew’s expression softened unexpectedly. “Never could. Since I was a kid-I just can’t deal with pain. Total wimp.”

“When we get married, William’s gonna have a field day with this,” I said, attempting to lighten the mood.

Something dark flashed across Matthew’s face-gone so quickly I almost thought I imagined it. His jaw clenched briefly before he forced a

smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes.

“Need to do some rehab exercises,” he said, switching topics fast. “Coming?”

The rehabilitation center took up the entire east wing-all shiny equipment and motivational posters nobody reads. Matthew’s therapist had the energy of an overly excited golden retriever.

“Mr. Redwood is crushing his recovery!” the guy announced. “Speed that would make Olympic athletes jealous. Must be the power of love, right?” He winked at me with zero subtlety.

“What love power…” Matthew mumbled, shoving him gently. His ears turned pink.

Adorable.

I found myself actually smiling for the first time since coming back to New York. My face felt weird-those muscles had forgotten how to

work.

Matthew caught my expression and something shifted in his eyes. I was about to ask what he was thinking when chaos erupted across the

room.

A pained groan followed by a crash sent my heart racing before my brain could catch up.

“Mr. Morgan, are you okay? Did you fall badly?” a panicked voice called out.

My stomach dropped to somewhere around my ankles.

I turned slowly, already knowing what I’d see. Blake sprawled on the floor beside parallel bars, his assistant Jack hovering uselessly nearby. Blake’s face contorted with pain as he tried to pull himself up, only to collapse again.

Look away, Aria. Just turn around. This isn’t your problem anymore. But my traitorous eyes wouldn’t obey, fixed on him as he struggled again and again to stand.

Chapter 199

The rehabilitation center doors flew open with a bang that made me jump.

‘Blake! What happened to you?!” Emma’s voice sliced through the room.

She ran in-actually ran, in four-inch Louboutins-and dropped dramatically to her knees beside Blake. Her hands reached for him.

“Blake, I shouldn’t have left you alone for so long,” she wailed, tears already streaming down her flawless face. ‘Nobody’s taking proper

care of you!”

Oh, for God’s sake. Could she be any more obvious? I felt my expression harden. So much for Blake’s big declarations about them being over. Men and their lies-some things never change.

“Matthew, let’s go,” I said, my voice steady despite the acid churning in my stomach. “You’ve done enough exercises for today.”

Matthew nodded, studying my face way too closely. We’d barely taken three steps when-

“Aria, don’t go!”

Blake’s voice cracked with desperation. Against every screaming instinct, I turned back.

He was pushing Emma away, his face ghost-white with exertion. He tried to stand but failed.

“I haven’t reconciled with Emma,” he said, each word clearly costing him. “I haven’t lied to you. She just showed up uninvited.”

The entire place went dead silent.

“Aria,” he continued, eyes locked on mine, “there’s only you in my heart. There has only ever been you.”

My face burned. Emma looked like she’d been slapped.

“Who’s in your heart has nothing to do with me,” I snapped, embarrassment making me sharp. “Focus on getting better instead of saying

ridiculous things.”

‘I’m fine, Blake insisted, trying to rise from his wheelchair. Color drained from his face, sweat beading his forehead.

Something inside me snapped. “Fine? Are you kidding? You can barely stand! You’re sweating buckets! Your whole body is shaking! And you call that fine? Do you think I’m blind or just stupid?”

I stormed off without looking at Blake’s expression. Seeing him in that half-dead state just made me furious.
