Chapter 178
My mind raced. ‘Mrs. Reynolds?”

Blake nodded. “I recognized her right away as the woman from thirteen years ago. My father has kept his mistress hidden in plain sight all
this time.
“What did you do when you found out?”
“I used her to get all of Henderson’s shares, then sent her ass to federal prison. His voice was ice cold. During the process, I discovered that Henderson and Mrs. Reynolds might have a kid together.”
“A kid?” The throbbing in my head intensified.
“My investigation got cut short when my health went to hell. But I believe Henderson loves Mrs. Reynolds and their child more than he ever loved my mother or me.”
“Three years ago, when you were critically ill-*
“He tried to take control of everything,” Blake finished. “Just more proof.”
I thought about Elizabeth, how devoted she seemed to Henderson. And then I thought about Blake, how his cold, ruthless personality suddenly made sense. Being betrayed by the person you trust most would mess anyone up.
A memory surfaced-Henderson jogging early one morning with a woman. And another memory: three years ago, after arguing with Victoria at Morgan Mansion, Henderson had called me into his study and asked weird questions about Victoria.
The thought of Victoria struck me as a physical blow. The possibility was too terrible to fully form in my mind, let alone voice aloud.
I shook my head, forcing myself back to the present. “Your family drama doesn’t change anything between us, Blake. Reopening old wounds won’t fix what’s broken.”
“But it proved you’re Aria, didn’t it?” His eyes locked onto mine.
Damn it. In my shock, I’d revealed memories only Aria would have. The crafty bastard had trapped me.
“Fine. Yes, your mind games proved my identity. But that doesn’t mean jack.”
“Do you really think I’d spill my darkest secrets just to confirm what I already knew?” Blake’s voice softened. I wanted you to understand that these three years haven’t been the happy ending everyone thinks.”
“I hoped you might feel something for me besides hatred,” he added. “That you might not be so quick to run out the door.”

I stood up, creating distance between us. ‘My heart isn’t that soft anymore. I’ve had enough of being soft-hearted for the past thirteen
years.
“Even if your family life is a mess, you have Emma who truly loves you. That’s more than many people have.”
I pulled my hand free from his grasp and stepped back.
‘I won’t stay in this toxic swamp with you.”
“And you think Matthew’s side isn’t an even bigger swamp? Blake’s tone turned ugly. “The Redwood family has its own problems. You ll
face countless headaches with him.”
“Matthew’s mother has an almost pathological need to control him. Your life will be way harder than you think.”
His attempt to trash Matthew made my blood boil.
“Blake, why don’t you focus on your own train wreck of a life instead of trying to make yourself look better by putting others down. Have
some friggin’ dignity!”
In my mind, I thought: Who the hell does he think he is? Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. There’s nothing noble about him at
all.
I turned and walked toward the door, done with this conversation. This time, Blake didn’t try to stop me.
As I passed the full-length mirror, I caught a reflection of Blake sitting on the bed-his face ashen, tears silently streaming down his
cheeks.
I froze momentarily. In all our years together, I had never once seen Blake cry.
For a split second, I wondered if he truly did love me deeply. Then I pushed the thought away. Too little, too late.
I walked out the door and down the stairs, refusing to look back. As I stepped outside the mansion, I heard an anguished howl from upstairs that made my heart clench painfully.
