Chapter 123
Thank you, my little angel,” I whispered. ‘We’re so lucky to have you.”
“What are you two doing?”
A stern voice interrupted our moment. I pulled back from Aurora to see Ethan standing on the stairs, his small face set in a serious expression that looked comically out of place on a three-year-old.
“Why are you hugging each other like that?” he demanded, his arms crossed over his dinosaur t-shirt. “It looks weird.”
Aurora and I jumped apart, startled by his sudden appearance. She turned toward him, her expression caught between guilt and
embarrassment.
“Ha, haha, Ethan… Aurora laughed nervously. “I didn’t know you were home!”
I watched my son descend the stairs with the careful precision of someone much older. Even at three, his features already hinted at the
handsome man he would become.
“I’ve been home the whole time,” Ethan said pointedly. “You’re the one who left.”

I sighed. Three years old and already mastering passive-aggressive comments. Where did he get this personality? Certainly not from me or Aria. The doctors had promised me a girl. I’d bought pink dresses, tiny tutus, hair bows in every color. Then out came this serious little boy who acted like an old man trapped in a toddler’s body.
“Ethan, Aurora just went out to play for a bit,’ I said, trying to mediate.
He shook his head firmly. “Mom, you shouldn’t let her do whatever she wants. She already has three cavities. She doesn’t need more
sugar.”
Aurora hung her head. “I went to buy chocolate cake,’ she admitted. “But I fell down on my way back and the whole cake splattered on the
ground.”
“See?’ Ethan said, his voice softening slightly despite his stern expression. “You got what you deserved for sneaking out.”
‘I didn’t get to eat any chocolate cream at all, Aurora added mournfully.
Ethan frowned, his eyes scanning her rumpled appearance. “Where did you fall? Let me see.
Aurora started to pull up her dress to show her scraped knee, but Ethan’s face immediately turned bright red.
“No!” he practically shouted. “Girls shouldn’t show their legs to boys! That’s not proper!

Chapter 123
I pressed my lips together to keep from laughing as my three-year-old son blushed furiously and grabbed Aurora’s hand, practically
dragging her up the stairs.
‘Come on, we need to clean that and put medicine on it,’ he muttered, his voice still embarrassed but concerned.
I watched them leave, feeling all mixed up inside. Ethan had always looked out for Aurora, right from when they first met. Something about her made him go all protective, which was weird for such a serious kid. And Aurora, who usually hated being babied, actually let
him fuss over her.
Their whole thing fascinated me. Not even related, but tighter than most real siblings. Ethan, Mr. Serious, acting like Aurora was his job.
And with her condition, maybe she kind of was.
The doctors said it was leftover damage from the poisoning. When Aurora got worked up, her eyes would turn purple and shed get.
aggressive. Scary aggressive.
But she was getting better. The episodes didn’t happen as much anymore. And somehow Ethan always knew when one was coming. He d stick close, keep her distracted, talk her down.
I started gathering my papers, shoving the stuff about David’s release into a folder. At least the kids were figuring things out, even if us adults kept screwing everything up. That’s what mattered – that they turned out okay despite all our drama.
