Landon froze for a moment, then pressed his lips together and fell silent.

Joan quickly said, “I was kidding. I’m only twenty-one. I’m not in a rush to get married…”

“I want you to stay with me tonight. Can we get a room?”

The night before, they had planned to sleep together in the master bedroom at Lafitte Estates.

But Elise had designed that room.

The color scheme, furniture, lighting, and bedding had all been chosen by Elise.

In that setting, Landon couldn’t bring himself to be intimate

with Joan.

So they simply slept under the same blanket and talked.

That was when Joan saw Elise and Harold walk in together, followed by Daniel and several other employees.

Daniel had driven a Maybach to Maplewood Estates to pick up Harold for work.

When they turned onto Firefly Road, Harold suddenly told him to pull into a street-level parking spot.

By the time Harold stepped inside, he came face-to-face with Elise and the others.

The moment Joan saw Elise and Harold enter, her expression changed.

She turned and hurried away.

“Joan, you forgot your pads!” her coworker called loudly.

Harold and Elise, who had already reached the entrance, immediately turned at the sound of Joan’s name.

Everyone in the lobby immediately straightened up.

The greeting echoed through the lobby.

“Good morning, Mr. Nash.”

Joan could no longer make herself walk away.

She was certain that when her coworker called her name, Elise and Harold had noticed her.

She had planned to let Elise discover that she worked at Firefly Glow only after she became a full-time employee.

Joan forced a smile, tightened her grip on her phone, then turned around and lowered her head slightly.

“Good morning, Mr. Nash.”

Harold’s brows drew together as he instinctively glanced back at

Elise.

A flicker of surprise crossed Elise’s eyes before her expression quickly turned calm and distant.

She quietly glanced at Joan’s badge, steadied her breathing, and looked away.

Harold gave Joan a sidelong glance.

Her badge was yellow, which meant she was still an intern. Full-time employees had blue badges.

She must have been one of the UCLA students recruited during fall recruitment.

Joan then turned to Elise and Daniel.

“Good morning, Ms. White. Good morning, Mr. Harris.”

She greeted them with an easy smile.

Elise had always valued courtesy and composure. She would normally have returned the greeting without hesitation.

Yet this time, she acted as though she hadn’t heard Joan at all.

Elise still hated Joan for using her quilt as Blitz’s pee mat.

That was even more unforgivable than stealing Landon away.

Elise ignored Joan.

Daniel, however, spoke up.

“Are you Joan, the intern Marketing requested to fast-track into a full-time position?”

“Yes.”

Joan smiled confidently.

Daniel respected talent, so he asked one more question.

“Who hired you?”

The unpleasant scene was still replaying in Elise’s mind.

Still annoyed by what had happened, she muttered under her breath, “Whoever hired her must have lost their mind.”
