The Bride He Took for Granted
Chapter 74
Elise instinctively asked, “What is it?”
Harold didn’t answer. He turned and left the balcony.
The moment Harold disappeared, Blitz was back to his usual self.
With his tongue hanging out, he whined at Elise in a soft, eager
voice.
Without realizing it, Elise softened her voice when she spoke to
him.
“Why are you so different when he’s around?”
“Are you hungry? Want me to make you something?”
“How about some sliced ham?”
Ding-dong.
The doorbell rang.
“I’ll go see,” Elise told Blitz.
She shuffled to the entryway in her slippers and checked the
video doorbell.

It was Harold.
Since he was standing so close to the camera, she could only see his upper body.
When Elise opened the door, she saw the elegant leather case in his right hand.
She looked at him questioningly.
What was it?
Harold lifted the case with one hand and held it out to her.
“Compensation for your dishes.”
Once, after eating at her place, Harold had insisted on washing the dishes. He had ended up breaking one of her plates.
He had promised to replace the whole set.
Elise gave him the same answer as before.
“That really isn’t necessary, Mr. Nash. I have more dishes than I know what to do with. Losing one or two doesn’t matter.”
“I don’t like owing people,” Harold said.
“You’re making too much of it. It was just one plate. You don’t:20

As if he had expected that answer, Harold looked at her with an unreadable expression.
“Our companies are about to work together. Why are you so intent on making me owe you a favor, Elise?”
“I…” Elise was speechless.
Classic Harold.
Harold raised his brows slightly, then glanced down at the case, signaling for her to take it.
If she refused now, it would only make it seem like she really was trying to make him owe her.
“Then… thank you.”
Elise took the case with both hands.
Holding it steady with one hand, she opened it with the other and looked inside.
Inside was a set of handcrafted Limoges porcelain dinnerware.
The pieces were flawless, decorated with intricate patterns and finished with delicate gold accents.
A single plate from a collection like this could cost several 13:20

thousand dollars. The entire collection was easily worth a fortune…
Elise knew Harold was incredibly wealthy, but this was an outrageous way to compensate her.
“Mr. Nash, you may not know this, but my entire set of dishes cost less than a hundred dollars.”
She closed the case and held it back out to him.
But Harold didn’t take it. He didn’t even respond to her
comment.
Instead, he said, “If you really feel uncomfortable accepting it, make me some egg drop soup.”
“Egg drop soup?” Elise stared at him in disbelief.
A bowl of egg drop soup from a restaurant would probably cost him no more than a few dollars…
Then she noticed the dark circles under his eyes and the faint redness in them. He clearly hadn’t been sleeping well these past few days.
Maybe he was just too tired to go out for a meal.

Harold’s private chef had originally planned to come over and cook for him.
After several sleepless nights, Harold had a headache. He wanted to catch up on sleep, so he told the chef not to come.
Then he saw Elise.
And suddenly, he was hungry.
Somehow, the hunger felt worse than the headache.
Elise left the door open, then put the leather case away in the sideboard. She decided she would return it to Harold when the right opportunity came.
After that, she tied her hair back with an elastic and went into
the kitchen.
When Blitz came running over, he followed the smell straight to the kitchen. He sat down and looked up at Elise.
Seeing him, Elise grabbed a paper towel and dried her hands. She bent down, patted his head, and joked, “You came begging without even bringing a bowl?”
Blitz seemed to understand only half of what she said. He turned his head and looked toward the man standing in the kitchen doorway.

Elise froze.
When did he get there?
Should she explain that she was only teasing Blitz?
Harold’s expression didn’t change.
Looking down at Blitz, he said calmly, “Why are you looking at me? I brought a bowl.”
“Go get your own bowl.”
At the command, Blitz rose onto his hind legs and immediately
ran off.
Elise was amazed.
Not only had Harold not been offended by her joke, he had actually gone along with it.
Everyone said Harold was cold and sharp-tongued, that he could make anyone dislike him within five sentences.
But the way he spoke to Blitz was like a father dealing with a
mischievous child.
