The Bride He Took for Granted

Chapter 72

Joan wore a fitted black waitress uniform.

She had a good figure and delicate features, but she still couldn’t compare to Elise.

Joan knew Ethan hadn’t come here to say anything kind. She stood there quietly, her hands clasped in front of her.

“Do you really think you belong in Landon’s world? His family, his friends… people like you were never meant to be part of it.”

Joan dug her nails into her palms but said nothing.

“I grew up with Landon. I know him better than you do. What happened between you two? It was just a moment. It didn’t mean anything.”

“You were pregnant with his child once. I’ll give you enough money to move on. Take it and stay away from him.”

Ethan tossed the check onto the floor, gave Joan one last look of disgust, and walked out of the private room.

Jaw clenched, Joan watched him leave. The veins at her temples throbbed.

She bent down and picked up the check. It was dirty, a clear1 3:16

Rage burned through her.

She pulled out her phone and called Lynn.

Joan had left Landon too unsettled to sleep.

He couldn’t focus on work. His mind kept returning to the image of Joan being cornered and humiliated.

After all, she had lost a child because of him. The least he could do was protect her.

That evening, Landon returned to the nightclub looking for

Joan.

He didn’t find her.

Instead, he found Lynn.

Following Joan’s plan, Lynn forced herself to look angry as she faced him.

“You and your friends have always looked down on people like us, haven’t you? You think money can fix everything. You hurt her, and then your friend tried to pay her off and make her disappear.”

She placed the check on the table between them.

“Take it back, Mr. Carter. Joan doesn’t need your pity.”

Landon immediately realized something was wrong.

After pressing Lynn for answers, he finally learned what Joan had been through.

Furious, he drove to find Ethan and Jason.

“You can look down on Joan if you want. I love her, and that’s enough. I’ll let it go this once. But if it happens again, we’re done.”

With that, Landon walked away.

Like a man who had completely lost control, he tore through the streets of Los Angeles.

Joan only wanted another job. She only wanted to work hard and build a better life.

What had she done wrong?

Yet she had been mocked and humiliated by the people closest to him.

Feeling like he had failed her, Landon called Lynn and asked3:17

He needed to find her. He needed to make things right.

Lynn hesitated before telling him Joan had gone to the suburbs for a part-time job and was on the bus.

Landon checked the route and immediately drove after it.

His Bentley tore through the drizzle.

When he spotted the bus ahead, he accelerated.

He passed it, then suddenly cut across the road.

The tires screeched as he slammed on the brakes, bringing the Bentley to a stop directly in front of the bus.

The bus driver slammed on the brakes, but it was too late.

The sudden stop sent passengers tumbling forward, crashing into one another in a chaotic mess.

Once everyone had recovered from the sudden stop, passengers rubbed their chests and leaned toward the windows, trying to see what was happening.

A strikingly handsome young man stepped out of the Bentley.

Looking frantic, he rushed to the front of the bus and pounded qu the door.

“Joan! Joan, get off the bus! I need to talk to you…”

Everyone turned in confusion

“Who’s Joan?”

“Wait, which one is Joan?”

“Oh my God, this is straight out of a romance novel. He actually stopped a bus just to see her. He must really love her.”

“I’m kind of jealous…”

A pale young woman stood up, still shaken.

“Excuse me. Let me through.”

“Driver, please open the door. Hurry.”

The driver didn’t find the scene romantic at all.

He had nearly had a heart attack. Rules could wait-he opened the door immediately and let her off.

Joan stepped down from the bus.

Before she could say anything, tears spilled from her eyes.

She clenched her fists and hit Landon’s chest.
