In the interview waiting area, Lynn had not expected to see several graduate students from her own university competing for a single marketing position.

She couldn’t help feeling nervous.

Lowering her voice, she whispered to Caleb, “Joan really picked the worst time to break up with Landon. Couldn’t she have waited a few more days?”

Lynn knew Joan was just playing hard to get with Landon.

That evening, Lynn treated Joan to dinner to thank her for helping Caleb secure the job opportunity.

Joan didn’t go inside the restaurant.

“I talked to my old boss. I’m going back to waitressing.”

“Seriously?” Lynn frowned. “Joan, I really don’t understand you. Landon is willing to spend money on you. Why won’t you accept it? A few years with him could save you decades of struggle…”

Joan shook her head.

“That kind of life-staying hidden, never being acknowledged- isn’t what I want.”

She slowly looked up.

Her eyes caught the light, revealing a quiet determination.

“Do you remember Elise at this year’s charity gala?”

“Yeah, of course. How could I forget?”

Lynn still remembered how jealous she had felt that night.

Lynn had always known what Joan wanted.

Blitz was gone.

Even his kennel had disappeared.
