< The Bride He Took for Granted
Chapter 7
Landon watched Elise leave, the anger inside him burning even hotter.
He knew perfectly well that with Joan’s background, his parents would never allow her into the Carter family.
He had never even planned to marry her. She was just a woman he happened to be interested in, someone he wanted to take care of.
Joan was too proud, too self-possessed. In a glittering jungle like Los Angeles, where people devoured each other without leaving bones behind, she would suffer without protection.
He could not trust anyone else with her.
For a period after that, Landon still did not give up looking for Joan.
He did not dare to act openly for fear of alerting Victor, so he asked his close friends for help instead, which almost ruined those relationships.

Landon replied impatiently, “How many times are you going to use that to morally blackmail me? Didn’t I take care of her family business and even her personally? In this relationship, I have given no less than she has. I owe her nothing.”
“Landon, you’re twenty-four. The first woman you ever loved was Elise. She weighs more in your heart than Joan ever will. You’ll regret losing her.”
Landon dismissed it coldly. “So in the end, none of you are willing to help me find Joan. You all look down on her. I’ll find her myself.”
Joan had a weak mother and a mentally unstable brother to care for. She worked up to ten jobs a day.
Landon kept appearing in high-end restaurants and
entertainment venues.
He was sure he would run into her.
Elise no longer contacted Landon.
She also stopped mentioning the engagement cancellation to either side of the family. 278

Yet one week before the ceremony, something happened that made her abandon that decision.
Elise suffered from severe menstrual pain.
A gynecology doctor at Aurora Private Medical Center had once prescribed her a Oshá Root Remedies that worked very well.
So on the first day of her period, she drove to Aurora Private Medical Center.
She handed her ID to the doctor.
The doctor looked at the screen for a few seconds, frowned, and said, “Miss White, your condition is not suitable for Oshá Root Remedies. You should be taking a combined short-acting oral contraceptive to repair your
endometrium.”
Elise frowned in confusion. “Menstruation is just the normal shedding of the endometrium. Why would I need to repair it?”
The doctor thought she was trying to hide her condition and spoke more sharply.

your abortion doctor tell you that?”
“Abortion?”
Elise froze. “Me? You must be mistaken.”
She had never done anything that would make her pregnant. How could she have had an abortion?
It was absurd.
The doctor pointed at the screen. “It clearly states here that last night at 11 p.m., you underwent a termination procedure at our hospital.”
Elise still could not believe it.
The doctor reluctantly refreshed the record again, then looked even more shocked.
“Strange… you are physically here, but it shows that one minute ago, Ward 701 in obstetrics prescribed anti-inflammatory medication?”
Elise’s heart sank violently at those words, a sinister suspicion forming in her mind.

obstetrics department.
The door was closed.
She turned the handle and stepped in quietly.
Pale as a sheet, Joan sat propped against the headboard with an IV running.
Landon held a bowl of pigeon soup, blowing on a spoonful before gently feeding it to her lips.
“Be good. Drink this and you’ll recover.”
Joan turned her face away, refusing it. At that moment, she saw Elise.
Her pupils contracted slightly. She then opened her mouth and took the soup, speaking louder than usual to Landon.
“Is ruining Elise’s reputation worth it for mine?”
“I never ask whether something is worth it. I only do what I want.”

“If she hadn’t gone to my parents to complain and caused you to be wronged into leaving school, you wouldn’t have been in that car accident or lost the baby. This is her own fault.”
Joan smiled faintly at Elise, satisfied.
From the beginning, she had known Landon did not intend to marry her. He was only casually involved with
her.
So after Ruth slapped her, she had deliberately disappeared.
She also had her classmate Lynn Moore tell Landon that Elise had brought his mother to cause trouble, deepening the rift between them.
The pregnancy had been unexpected.
She and Landon had only spent one night together outside, and he had been drunk.
She could not keep the child, but she also did not want to lose it for nothing.
