The Bride He Took for Granted
Chapter 68
On the street, Jane got into the shuttle van.
Leaning halfway out of the window, she gently ran her fingers through Elise’s hair.
Looking closely at Elise’s features, she could see traces of Sharon
in her.
There was no doubt Sharon had given birth to her.
But whether Leonard was Daisy’s biological father, Jane couldn’t say.
Before the van left, Jane reminded her,
“Don’t go back to the White Manor unless you really have to, okay? And if anything happens, don’t keep it to yourself. Ask someone for help. Don’t try to carry everything alone.”
Looking up at Jane, Elise felt her nose sting.
“Don’t worry about me, Mom. I’ll take care of myself. You need to take care of yourself too. Keep your phone charged, and answer whenever I call, okay?”
Trying to lighten the mood, Chloe put an arm around Elise’s
Koulders.

“Don’t worry, Jane. Elise has me. We’re close enough to take a bullet for each other.”
Jane laughed and quickly wiped away her tears.
Then she turned to the driver.
“Let’s go.”
Elise ran alongside the van for a few steps.
Only when she could no longer hold back her tears did she finally stop.
After the van disappeared from sight, Chloe patted her shoulder.
“Come on. Let’s go home.”
Elise wiped her tears away.
“I’m not going home yet. There’s still something I need to figure out.”
“Okay. Then let’s have dinner together tonight.”
After Chloe left as well, Elise took a deep breath and returned to Firefly Glow.

One hand was in his pocket, while the other held his phone. He was so absorbed in whatever he was reading that he didn’t notice Elise watching him.
“Hey, Mr. Clark.”
Jason paused at the sound of her voice.
He pulled his right hand from his dress pants pocket, locked his phone screen, and looked around for Elise.
Elise smiled and stepped closer.
“Do you have time? Let’s have lunch together.”
Another elevator opened, and two female employees walked out.
A sweet love song was playing from one of their phones. When they saw Elise, they waved warmly.
“Hi, Elise.”
Ever since the incident with the sanitary pads, everyone at Firefly Glow knew who Elise was.
Many people admired her.
Wherever Elise went, someone would greet her.

always responded with the same sincere smile.
“Hi. Nice to meet you.”
The upbeat rhythm of the song made Jason’s heart beat a little faster.
Feeling slightly nervous, he slipped his phone back into his pocket and adjusted his black-rimmed glasses, trying to hide hist awkwardness.
“Where do you want to eat?”
Elise pointed outside.
“There’s a French restaurant at the intersection to the left of the building.”
She smiled.
す
“I’ve been meaning to thank you properly for helping me with
the cameras and smart lock. Last time, I only bought you beef noodles, and I felt like it wasn’t really enough.”
Jason agreed immediately.
“Okay. Let’s go.”
They walked into the restaurant together.

Since they still had to work overtime that afternoon, Elise decided not to order wine.
Instead, she ordered two glasses of orange juice.
After the meal, neither of them was in a hurry to leave, so Elise ordered two coffees.
Taking a small sip, she chatted with Jason about work.
Using Echoes of Will as a starting point, Elise naturally steered the conversation toward Crossing Fate.
“I downloaded Crossing Fate again a few days ago. The first time I played, I had no idea what I was doing. I transformed every time I got into a fight and still ended up dying. My only teammate even yelled at me in the end…”
It was the first time Jason had heard Elise talk to him so much.
She sounded less like his colleague and more like an old friend catching up with him.
For once, being around her felt effortless.
His heart beat a little faster.
He studied Elise carefully.

In the fourteen years he had known her, her smile had always been gentle, like sunlight at dawn.
But back then, those smiles had always been for Landon.
Now, she was smiling at him.
Jason lowered his head and picked up his coffee cup.
He didn’t drink from it. He simply held it for a moment before setting it back down.
Then he told Elise everything he knew about the game.
“The game failed largely because the opening was too difficult. A lot of players couldn’t even get past the first level.”
After a moment of thought, Elise asked, “Would it be difficult to rebuild it?”
“Not impossible, but it wouldn’t be easy either. The biggest issue is probably the story. It needs to be more engaging. They also need to make progression smoother-let players earn points and unlock transformations faster. Otherwise, people keep dying before they even get to experience what makes the game fun.”
Elise listened carefully.
After a moment of hesitation, Jason asked,

“You seem really interested in this game.”
Keeping her expression neutral, Elise replied,
“I think its message is meaningful. Saving others, saving fate, saving yourself.”
