Chapter 60
Harold seemed a little surprised too. When his eyes met Elise’s, the corner of his mouth lifted slightly.
For some reason, Elise had the distinct impression that he looked pleased with himself, as if he’d just found out he was right about something.
The cut on Landon’s forehead had darkened to a deep red, making his face look even paler.
He walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window and stared
outside.
By the car, Harold opened the door for Elise and Jane, holding one hand above the frame as they got in.
Once they were both inside, he got behind the wheel and drove
away.
Landon felt as though he’d taken a punch to the chest.
He pulled out his phone and called Jason.
“Are Elise and Harold close?”
“Why do you ask?”

Jason was silent for a couple of seconds.
“From what I’ve seen, they have a normal working relationship. Nothing more.”
“That’s it?” Landon frowned. “Harold personally drove Elise here just now. Then he left with her and her mom.”
“Harold drove her?” Jason sounded genuinely surprised.
After a brief pause, he added, “I heard from Daniel that Harold was supposed to have lunch at The Rossmore today. Lafitte Estates is pretty close by. Maybe he was headed that way anyway and just gave Elise a ride.”
Landon said nothing.
That made sense.
The Rossmore wasn’t far from Lafitte Estates. Everything had happened so suddenly. Elise had probably panicked and taken the first ride she could get.
The tightness in Landon’s chest eased.
“Alright.”
Jason didn’t hang up.

After a moment, he said, “Landon, Elise loved you. You know she did. But that doesn’t mean she’ll forgive you for anything. She’s not going to accept you cheating on her.”
He paused.
“I’m saying this as your friend. End things with Joan and apologize to Elise. Maybe you can still fix this before it’s too late.”
Landon hated being lectured.
Growing up, no one except his father had ever dared talk to him that way. Not even his teachers.
Lately, though, Jason seemed to be doing it more and more, and it was starting to get on his nerves.
His expression darkened.
“I know what I’m doing.”
After hanging up, Landon looked over and found Joan watching him in silence.
There was no smile on her face. She looked hurt, almost defeated.
Joan’s sadness was all an act.

She knew exactly how to keep Landon hooked. She had figured him out a long time ago.
She could not always go against him, but she could not always indulge him either.
She knew she had become so obedient lately that she was losing her own personality. That was why Landon’s attention had started drifting back to Elise.
Fine. I’ve made things too easy for him lately. Time to pull back a little and make him choose between us again.
Joan looked away and carried Mochi into the guest room.
When Landon followed her in, she had already pulled out her suitcase and set it on the floor.
She began taking clothes out of the closet and tossing them onto the bed.
Landon strode over and snatched a blouse from her hand.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m leaving,” Joan said calmly. “This was never my home.”
“You’re leaving?” Landon stared at her. “You’re breaking up with me?”

“Yes.”
There was no hesitation in her voice.
“Today, standing there in front of Elise’s mom and Mr. Nash, I was so ashamed I could barely look at them. I know what I’m doing is wrong.”
Her voice softened.
“I really love you, Landon. I used to think that as long as I could be with you, even like this, it would be enough. But it’s not anymore.”
She lowered her eyes.
“I’m getting greedy. I want you all to myself, and I know that isn’t fair. This isn’t going to end well for either of us.”
She paused, then said quietly, “Maybe it’s better to stop now, before it hurts even more.”
Tears slid silently down her cheeks.
She pulled the blouse out of Landon’s hand and stuffed it into the suitcase with the rest of her clothes.
“And about Lynn—you promised you’d give her a fair shot.”

Chapter 60
As far as Joan was concerned, she had done her part. Whether Caleb or Lynn got hired was up to them now.
And if neither of them made the cut, well, that wasn’t her fault.
Joan slipped the pink diamond ring off her finger and placed it on the table.
Then she looked at Landon through tear-filled eyes.
“Goodbye.”
Landon stood frozen as she picked up Mochi, grabbed the handle of her suitcase, and headed for the door.
Anger surged through him.
Elise was already pulling away from him. Now Joan wanted to leave too?
