Chapter 50
That one word had always had the same effect on Elise as a parent saying, “I’m going to count to three.”
No matter how angry she was, she would usually stop, take a few breaths, and eventually do what Landon wanted.
But this time, she kept walking.
She had barely made it a few steps when a hand clamped around
her arm.
Landon’s grip was so tight that pain shot through her.
Elise’s face went pale.
Before she could react, he shoved her back against the side of his Bentley. One of the pop-out door handles pressed painfully into
her waist.
She winced.
“Let go of me. We can talk.”
Landon kept one hand locked around her wrist and planted the other against the car beside her, boxing her in.
voice was thick with mockery.

“All dressed up-you’re really trying to catch Harold’s eye?”
He laughed coldly. “Guess he’s not that picky if he’s after a woman I don’t even want.”
Twenty minutes earlier, Landon had arrived at Firefly Glow.
The first thing he noticed in the lobby was the pink pad dispenser-and the slogans on the screen sounded like something Elise would come up with.
Two women nearby were talking in low voices as they took pads from the machine.
“Elise looks so sweet and innocent, but apparently she’s got
some moves.”
“Seriously. Have you seen the way she looks at Mr. Nash? Her eyes practically light up. You can’t tell me she isn’t into him.”
Landon should have been furious.
Instead, something colder settled in his chest.
Fear.
He just didn’t understand what he was afraid of yet.

Elise was no match for Landon physically.
After what he had done the last time he was drunk, she didn’t want to push him any further while he was like this.
But even then, there was only so much nonsense she could take.
“I don’t know what you heard, but there’s nothing going on between Mr. Nash and me. Believe me or don’t.”
She looked him straight in the eye.
“And if you don’t want this engagement, then tell your parents to go to the White family and end it.”
I’d thank you if you did.
Some of the tension left Landon’s face.
The sneer in his eyes didn’t.
“End it?”
He gave a humorless laugh.
“Funny. You were the one who cried the second I agreed to get
ggiged to you.”

He leaned closer.
“You can act like you don’t care now, but don’t cry if I actually
call it off.”
His words pulled Elise back to the day they had barely made it out alive.
She hadn’t been the one crying.
Landon had.
His eyes had been red with emotion as he held both of her hands tightly, too overwhelmed to say anything.
It wasn’t until they were on the flight home, high above the clouds, that he finally spoke.
He cupped her dirt-streaked face in both hands, looking at her with an intensity she had never seen before.
“Elise, I know now. I love you. When this plane lands, we’re getting engaged. We’re getting married. And we’re spending the rest of our lives together.”
Back then, she had believed him.
She had thought all those years of waiting were finally over.

She had thought she could stop trying so hard to be everything her parents expected and finally live the life she wanted.
Most of all, she had thought Landon would love her with the same certainty and devotion she had always given him.
She had thought…
But in the end, it had all been wishful thinking.
Landon saw Elise’s bloodshot eyes and the faint redness around
them.
She looked like she could cry at any second.
His chest tightened, but at the same time, a strange sense of reassurance settled over him.
She still cares.
“If you don’t believe me, then go to the White family and call it
off.”
Elise’s voice was perfectly calm.
The moment Landon relaxed his grip, she shoved him away with
both hands.

She rubbed the sore spot on her waist where the door handle had dug into her, then looked at him evenly.
“Do you dare?”
