The Bride He Took For Granted novel Chapter 30

Chapter 30

“Whether you need it isn’t the point. What matters is whether Landon can stand the sight of those scars.” Sharon’s expression hardened. “No man wants a woman covered in ugly scars.”

Then why did you beat me? Why could you never treat me the way you treat Dora?

The questions screamed inside Elise’s head.

But she already knew exactly what Sharon would say.

Because you never listened. Because you brought it on yourself. Because this is your fate.

Elise had once wondered if she was really Leonard and Sharon’s daughter. But the DNA test had confirmed it.

She even looked more like Sharon than Dora did.

There was no point arguing anymore. Fighting back would only make things worse for her.

Elise reached out, took the two jars, and closed her fingers tightly around them.

Sharon gestured toward the couch.

Elise sat as far away from both of them as she could.

Clara brought coffee for all three of them.

“Where have you been staying for the past two weeks?” Sharon asked.

She had already checked Elise’s bank balance. Elise had only a few hundred dollars to her name-nowhere near enough to cover her basic living expenses.

“Chloe helped me find a place to stay,” Elise replied carefully.

“Move back home immediately,” Leonard ordered.

His tone made it clear there would be no discussion.

“Victor gave us his word. All you have to do is apologize publicly, admit you were wrong, and say the whole thing was a misunderstanding. Then you can still marry Landon.”

Elise frowned, caught off guard.

She couldn’t imagine why a man as proud and powerful as Victor would overlook everything and still accept her as his daughter-in-law.

For reasons she had never understood, Victor had always been quusually tolerant of her.

“I want to focus on work right now. I’m not ready to get married.” Elise picked up her purse and stood. “If that’s all, I should go.”

Just then, a coffee cup flew at Elise’s feet and shattered against

the floor.

Clara and the other staff cried out.

They didn’t need to look up to know who had thrown it. They lowered their heads and quietly backed away.

Scalding coffee splashed across Elise’s ankle.

Then she saw Leonard heading toward the golf bag, his face dark with rage.

Her entire body went rigid.

The memory of the whip slicing into her skin came rushing back.

Elise began to shake.

Ignoring the burn on her ankle, she limped toward the door as fast as she could.

She didn’t even notice the jars of scar cream slipping from her hand.

Sharon watched her flee, then closed her eyes as if the sight pained her.

“Give her more time,” she said to Leonard.

Leonard said nothing. His fist tightened around the whip until his knuckles turned white.

Two seconds later, he tossed it back into the golf bag, took Sharon firmly by the hand, and led her upstairs.

Only then did the staff exhale and dare to raise their heads.

“It’s still pouring. Ms. White even left her umbrella behind.”

“Her wounds haven’t even healed, and now she’s burned her

ankle too.”

“Poor Ms. White…”

Clara stood in the doorway, watching Elise stumble through the rain on her injured leg.

She let out a long sigh.

Then she glanced upstairs. Leonard and Sharon stood side by side, their faces equally grim.

Helplessness settled over Clara’s features.

Why’s everyone in this family so miserable?

Elise didn’t dare look back. She ran all the way out of White

Manor.

The cab was still waiting, its hazard lights flashing.

She yanked open the door and practically fell into the back seat.

“Please…” she gasped through her tears. “Just drive. Hurry!”

The driver stared at her in alarm. She was soaked to the bone, her hair plastered across her face.

He glanced toward the manor, but no one was following her. So why did she look like she was running for her life?

His nerves kicked in too. Without asking any questions, he hit the gas and sped away.

It wasn’t until they reached the main road that Elise finally began to relax.

Outside, the rain only grew heavier.
