Chapter 22

Back at Novatech Global, Elise sneezed.

Jason-Landon’s friend and business partner-looked over, concerned. “You okay? Want some water?”

Elise slipped her umbrella into the stand. “Is Landon-”

She caught herself. “Is Mr. Carter in his office?”

“Yeah. Is this about Firefly Glow’s decision to stop working with vendors?”

Elise stared at him. “It’s public already?”

“Yeah. Firefly Glow put out an official statement.”

Her face fell.

“Elise…” Jason began.

She turned back to him. He hesitated before asking, “Are

you… waiting for Landon to apologize?”

“We” Her answer was clipped.

Jason wasn’t exactly shy, but he rarely spoke to her one-on-one. She figured that probably had something to do with the way she was.

Still, she’d always thought Jason was a decent guy. They just weren’t close enough to talk about anything personal.

Elise gave him a small nod and headed for Landon’s

office.

Landon was considering selling the program outright. But that would mean giving up the copyright, and there was no telling how much future profit they’d be leaving on the table.

Landon had considered working with a smaller

distribution platform, but negotiating the revenue split would be a hassle. More importantly, none of them could deliver the kind of traffic Firefly Glow could.

When Novatech Global first launched, Landon had developed a game of his own.

Young and overconfident, he had rejected Firefly Glow’s

offer and decided to market the game himself.

It flopped.

outdated. No one was interested in buying the rights, and it had been gathering dust ever since.

Frustrated, Landon loosened his tie and looked at Elise.

“Any other ideas?”

At least when it came to work, Landon was willing to

listen to her.

Elise was reasonable, after all.

“I reached out to set up a meeting with Harold,” Elise said. “But I won’t know for another week if he’ll agree to

see me.”

The thought made Landon uneasy.

He’d never let Elise meet another man alone.

Especially not Harold-the only man in Los Angeles whose family was wealthier than his.

After Elise left, his executive assistant studied his expression. “Ms. White really does care about you.”

That made Landon feel a little better.

The assistant hesitated. “Maybe she thinks… you like. women who push back. Like Ms. Reed.”

It clicked for Landon.

Maybe that really was it.

Three days passed, and Elise still hadn’t heard from Firefly Glow.

Then, on the fourth day, Harold came to see her instead.

It all started when Chloe got a craving for a few dishes

from White Rose Bistro.

Elise offered to pick up the order right away.

But Chloe told her to stay home. She was already on her way to White Rose Bistro.

After ordering and paying, Chloe took a table near the entrance while she waited.

Then Landon and Joan walked in, with Landon carrying a dog in his arms.

Joan clung to Landon’s arm. “I’ll get the job, right?”

Landon gave her an indulgent smile. “Yes. What is this, the eight hundredth time you’ve asked?”

“I know. I just like hearing you say it. What you say goes.

Landon laughed.

Over the past week, Joan had made it through the faculty recommendation and interview rounds. Now, she’d reached the final evaluation stage.

The interviewers had clearly been impressed with her.

At this point, getting hired was practically a sure thing.

As they walked deeper into the restaurant, Landon held the dog in his arms and asked with a sigh, “Why are you so set on working there?”

“Because of you.”

Joan looked up at him as if no one else were there.

“You need Firefly Glow’s platform. If I land the job, maybe I can help. And I want to prove to you that I can make it in Los Angeles on my own.”

Before Landon could respond, someone nearby started clapping.

“Wow. Beautiful. I’m practically in tears. You must be Joan. You really know how to put on a show.”

The moment Landon saw Chloe, his expression darkened.
