Chapter 426: What The Fuck Is That

DRAKENFELL — GRAND HALL

Tiberon Drakenfell was walking through the grand hall when he stopped.

The stopping was involuntary. His body halted mid-stride the way a man’s body halts when the brain receives information that requires the legs to pause so the eyes can confirm what they are seeing, because what the eyes were seeing could not be correct, and the legs were going to wait until the eyes finished their assessment before committing to additional movement.

The eastern wall of the grand hall had been painted.

The mural was enormous. Floor to ceiling, spanning the full width of the eastern wall, rendered in oils that were still drying, the colors vivid and precise, the detail extraordinary.

The Drakenfell royal family in full regalia. Tiberon stood at the center in his ceremonial armor, expression stoic, posture regal, rendered with a likeness that was flattering enough to be suspicious and accurate enough to be recognizable. Bellatrix was beside him, her hand resting on his arm, her expression serene, her crown gleaming, her positioning communicating a single, unmistakable message: I am here. I belong here. Removing me removes the wall.

Dexmon was painted to Tiberon’s left. Crown Prince. Ceremonial dress. The artist had captured the jawline and the posture as if he had studied Dexmon extensively. Beside Dexmon, hand in his, white hair cascading, green eyes luminous, was Serena.

Serena was in the royal family mural. Serena, who had been in Drakenfell for a matter of months. Serena, who Bellatrix had tolerated with the warmth of a glacier and was now including in a permanent, architectural display of familial unity that would outlast every person depicted in it.

Hyran Thornfell stopped beside him. The mage had walked beside Tiberon for fourteen years and knew that the king’s legs did not stop without cause.

Hyran looked at the wall.

His mouth opened. Nothing came out. His mouth closed. This was the first time in Hyran Thornfell’s adult life that his mouth had opened and produced silence, and the silence was so unprecedented that it constituted a historical event.

Tiberon spoke.

"What the fuck is that."

The words left Tiberon Drakenfell’s mouth flat. He had served three decades as king, had addressed war councils, negotiated with emperors, delivered eulogies, and commanded armies. But in this moment, the common tongue, with its full breadth of vocabulary, contained exactly one word that was adequate for this moment.

Fuck.

A man standing on a scaffold at the far end of the mural turned. He was the artist. His hands were stained with paint. His apron was covered in colors that matched the wall behind him. He had been hired, paid, and instructed, and was now being asked to explain his instructions to the person who had been painted without his consent.

"Your Majesty." The artist climbed down. Approached. Bowed. "Queen Bellatrix commissioned the piece three days ago. The brief was specific. The royal family in ceremonial regalia. Full wall. Permanent installation."

"She commissioned it."

"Yes, Your Majesty."

"Three days ago."

"Yes, Your Majesty. With instructions to begin immediately and work through the night if necessary. The queen was very clear on the timeline."

Tiberon looked at the mural. He looked at Bellatrix’s face on the wall, serene and regal and permanent. He looked at her hand on his arm, a painted gesture of unity that his actual wife had executed without his knowledge, his approval, or his participation in the sitting.

He looked at Hyran.

Hyran was still staring at the mural. The mage’s expression had transitioned from speechless to analytical, parsing a move on a chessboard he had failed to anticipate and was reverse-engineering the strategy.

"She included Serena," he commented.

The transition was instantaneous. Her eyes moved across the page in a blur that tracked left to right at a velocity that made the reading indistinguishable from scanning and the scanning indistinguishable from magic.

Pages turned in rapid succession, the paper making a sound like a deck of cards being shuffled, each page processed, filed, categorized, and stacked in the time it took a normal reader to finish a sentence.

Dex stopped mid-document.

He looked up and blinked a few times processing it. It took him five full seconds. Then he pinched the bridge of his nose.

"I knew she could read at Alpha speed. I have seen her do this. And I have been sitting here for two hours going through these reports manually instead of mindlinking her for help."

Serena stopped mid-page. The stopping was as abrupt as the starting, her eyes freezing on a line, the blur resolving into stillness, the document suspended in her hand like she had been paused by an invisible hand.

She looked up at him. "It is okay, Dex. I have been told it is disturbing to watch. By Elara. And Gavri—"

The name died in her throat. Her mouth closed around the unfinished syllable. Her face fell, the expression changing from casual to wounded in the space between two letters.

"I will finish these," she said, and her voice quieter now.

Before Dex could respond, she resumed Alpha speed reading. The blur returned, pages turned, and the sound of paper filled the silence.

Dex watched her for two more seconds, then returned to his own reports. He did not address it.

Tiberon knocked on the door frame.
