Chapter 389
Laila’s POV
Richard’s loud clapping silenced the whispers. Even the Council stopped reading the evidence to consider him, as he closed the distance, coming to the base of the stairs
“A fine act, Laila, but this is no time for games.” He turned away from the stage, facing the faceless crowd. Waving his arms wide, he announced, “My people! I’m very sorry to have to be the one to tell you this, but our beloved princess has come to us broken.” He gestured toward his head. “Her mind is unwelk I fear she has been claimed by the same madness that affected her mother in the end.”
“That’s ridiculous,” I snapped. “If that were true, where would I have obtained these documents?”
“Forgeries, all,” Richard said. “She will do anything to maintain her delusion.”
“I am not deluded,” I said. “He is lying. He has tried to kill me several times, and he will continue to do so until he succeeds. But he will never succeed.”
“The madness is rampant. You cannot believe her! Why would I ever want to kill her? She is my beloved niece?”
“Because I am the next in line after my father in the order of succession,” I announced. “So long as I am alive, my uncle’s claim to the role of pack Alpha is false! He hoped I had died. Now that I’m back, I stand in his way once more.”
“She’s lying!” Richard growled, his temper flaring. He looked back at me. “You cannot prove that, little niece.”
“I can,” I told him. Carefully, I reached under my puffy skirts to where I had hidden the book, detached it, and then held it aloft for all to see. “This is the official rules of succession, as written by the founders of the pack.” I opened to the page and then held
it out for the Council of the Elders to read.
At the base of the stage, Richard’s face turned pale. “Another forgery!” he declared.
This time, one of the Elders answered for me. “A book, Richard? Is she a bookmaker now too? And a skilled enough one to make the book appear dated? And with the same cover as the other texts from this time, from our founders?”
Another Elder took the book from me and a few read the tome more carefully.
“Do not entertain this!” Richard demanded. “She is a liar! I was the true heir! I am the rightful Alpha!”
“He is not,” said the Elder holding the book. “The text is clear. Laila, as the previous Alpha’s daughter, is the true heir she is our true leader. Our true Alpha.”
The crowd started whispering again, but this time, instead of looking at me with suspicion, they were glaring at Richard instead, their distrust rising to the surface, showing clearly on their faces.
Richard looked at all of them, his panic rising as his body tensed, his overconfidence chsappeared. He wasn’t a tool. He must have been able to see how the room was shifting away from him, the most loyal members of the pack finally starting to turn on him.
“No!” he shouted, like he might be able to stop this somehow, like there was any way to stop this.
“If you step down willingly,” I told him from the stage, my own confidence growing as his dwindled, “I will be merciful”
He spun on his heel, his eyes flashing red, dangerous. “You This is your fault! You should have died in that torest! The rogues were supposed to get rid of the both of you!”
“So you admit it?” I said “You are responsible for the death of my father For the attack that chased me out of the pack. The reason I had to stay gone ”
“Doesn’t matter now, does it? All my careful planning, wasted “He was starting to turn in his rage, tur sprouting over his skin, his hands curling into claws, his voice half human, half growly wolf “No I can still win Tean’t just need to end you!”
In a Dash, he fully shifted into his massive Alpha form and lunged toward me.
People screamed, scrambling, The Elders scrambled, running off the stage.
I didn’t move. I was scared, but not enough to lose faith in the man I trusted most.
Richard knew. He kept his wolfy gaze on me as he pushed himself up to his paws. He was used to people bending the knee for him, or his cheating. Did he even know how to fight fair?
He rushed toward me, and I dodge his attack easily. As he went by, I swatted him down, pushing him once more to the ground.
I was toying with him. He had no chance.
Growling with frustration, he pushed himself back up, and tried again. Once more, I shoved him down with my paws.
He must have known he couldn’t win against me. His gaze shitted from me to Laila. At once, he started running, aiming for her.
No more time for games.
He leapt, but anticipating his moves, I leapt first. I caught him midair, my teeth going straight for his neck
I bit down as hard as I could, even after heard a satisfying crunch
This man deserved worse than a quick death For what he did to Laila, her family, and her pack, he should have been dragged out into the street for all of the park to dole out punishment
But he was a danger to Laila, and I would never allow him to live, knowing he would continue to be a danger to her and her rule
50 Lhomped on his neck, breaking it.
By the time I landed on my feet, he was a limp corpse. I opened my mouth and dropped him.
Richard, false king of Lycans, was dead.
