She Was Never Just the Billionaire’s Wife (Natasha and Chase) novel Chapter 70

Chapter 70 Lily

(Natasha)

Lily starts burning up overnight.

I check on her at two in the morning out of habit, the way I always do, and the moment my hand touches her forehead I’m wide awake.

Too hot. Much too hot.

I take her temperature twice because I don’t want to be the mother who panics over nothing.

The thermometer says the same thing both times and it is not nothing.

Chase appears in the nursery doorway always immediately when I call his name, which means he was already awake and listening to me moving around in here.

He takes one look at Lily’s face, flushed and miserable against my shoulder, and says, “I’ll call Patel.”

“It’s two in the morning.”

“I know what time it is.”

He’s already dialing.

We manage the night in shifts.

Cool clothes, the infant paracetamol Dr. Patel recommends over the phone, and constant, careful monitoring.

Lily is unhappy about all of it and makes her feelings known at considerable volume for a person her size.

By morning the fever has dropped slightly but not enough.

Dr. Patel’s office fits us in as soon as they open at nine.

Chase drives.

I sit in the back with Lily because she cries less when she can see my face, and Chase adjusts the rearview mirror so he can see her too.

We don’t talk much. Both silently terrified.

Dr. Patel is a calm man, which I’ve always appreciated.

He doesn’t offer us any empty platitudes or reassurances.

He just works steadily through the examination, checks everything twice, and asks precise questions in a tone that doesn’t rise or fall regardless of what he finds.

What he finds makes him order bloodwork immediately.
