Chapter 24 The Impossible Lie
(Sonia)
Sitting across from Eleanor in the lounge, I carefully smooth the fabric of my silk dress over my perfectly flat stomach.
Eleanor sips her tea, looking very pleased with herself.
“Don’t pay any mind to Chase acting like a fool right now,” Eleanor says, setting her cup on the saucer.
“He’s a new father and besotted with his little girl. Which is why we have to protect him. That child upstairs is a Warren.”
“She’s Natasha’s baby,” I remind her.
Keeping my voice sweet and agreeable takes a massive amount of effort.
Honestly, the thought of Natasha bleeding out in a hospital bed brings me zero guilt.
Her death would make things so much easier for me.
If she stays in that coma forever, she can’t sign the divorce papers and where will that leave me?
I have no particular wish to be her brat’s stepmother.
She was supposed to take the baby and disappear froin our lives. Leaving me and Chase to build our own perfect family.
The squalling pest down the hall is nothing but an inconvenience.
Eleanor leans forward, her eyes gleaming with a calculating light.
“She can be yours, Sonia.”
My manicured nails dig sharply into the arms of my chair.
“What do you mean?”
“You’re already pregnant,” Eleanor states smoothly.
“When you give birth in a few months, we fudge the medical records, making you the biological mother of both children.”
Panic explodes in my chest.
My throat goes completely dry.
“Money buys anything, Sonia,” Eleanor continues, smiling like she just handed me a brilliant gift.
“With the right donation, any hospital record can be altered. It completely erases Natasha’s claim on the child, and it permanently ties you to Chase.”
My entire, carefully constructed plan is falling apart right in front of me.
I’m not pregnant.
Faking the pregnancy is simply the easiest way to force Chase to divorce his boring wife.

My plan is to marry him quickly, long before a real bump is supposed to show.
If I don’t get pregnant in the first month of our marriage, I’m going to stage a tragic, heartbreaking miscarriage to secure his permanent sympathy.
Doctor Evans will help me with that.
But now Eleanor is interfering and backing me into a corner.
“Eleanor, I don’t think Chase will ever agree to that,” I say, doing my best to sound regretful.
I force a soft, worried look onto my face.
“He knows she’s Natasha’s daughter. You’ve seen how obsessed he is with the baby.”
“Chase will do what is necessary for the family image,” she insists coldly.
“He always does. He just needs time to see reason. I’ll handle my son. You just focus on staying healthy for the rest of your pregnancy.”
Taking a slow sip of my tea, I hide my furious expression behind the rim of the cup.
Raising Natasha’s child is the last thing I want to do.
I refuse to play mother to a weakling that shares that pathetic woman’s blood.
“You’re so brilliant, Eleanor,” I lie smoothly, setting my cup down.
“I just worry about the public. Won’t they ask questions?”
“Let them ask,” Eleanor dismisses easily. “We control the narrative. We always have.”
I need to get out of this room before I lose my temper and scream at her.
“I need to lie down,” I murmur, placing a hand gently over my non-existent bump.
“The doctor says I need plenty of rest because I’m so delicate and small.”
“Of course, my dear,” Eleanor coos.
“Go rest. I’ll go check on my granddaughter.”
My mind spins wildly as I walk down the hallway.
How do I hide the fact that I’m not gaining a single pound?
I refuse to get fat on purpose.
Approaching the stairs, I notice the door to the nursery is slightly open.
I stop walking and peek quietly inside.
Chase isn’t in the room. The nurse sits in the corner, reading a magazine.
The tiny baby hies asleep in her expensive crib.
Staring at the child, pure disgust rolls through my stomach.
The baby looks nothing like Chase
