(Natasha)
I need to move.
Despite my very best intentions, my anger has been growing exponentially since Nathanial left.
Mom takes my place at the cot when I stand up.
She doesn't ask where I'm going.
She has the look of a woman who's been waiting for me to move for an hour and a half.
The corridor is dim at midnight.
Two nurses at the far station.
Chase is by the window, holding a cardboard cup in his hand.
He sees me and straightens.
Something flickers across his face that might be hope.
He thinks I’m finally coming out to talk to him.
"Natasha-"
I’m across the floor in five steps.
My hand comes up and knocks the cup out of his hand before he can register I'm moving.
It hits the wall behind him with a wet thunk.
Coffee fans out in a brown starburst down the paint and the cup rolls under a chair.
I’m dimly aware that I’m making a scene.
That somebody is going to have to clean up this miss.
That I’m acting out of character and will definitely regret my actions later.
Right now though, all I know is an anger so overwhelming I’m afraid of what I’d do if there weren’t witnesses surrounding us.
He looks down at his coffee splattered sleeve and makes no move to wipe it off.
His face is grey under the corridor lights.
Two days of stubble cover his cheeks.
His hair flat on one side from sitting in the hospital chair at an angle for hours.
Days.
"You knew."
"Natasha-"
"You knew about Nathanial. You knew that Clarice was my mother. You fucking knew that Sonia is my sister and you said nothing! How long have you known?"
He looks at me with a wretched expression on his face and says nothing.
"How. Long."
"Since the punch."
"What punch?"
"Sonia sent a message implying you were having an affair with Nathanial. That the overlapping markers meant Lily was his child. I went to his hotel to confront him a few weeks ago."
Weeks.
I’m too angry about him knowing about my family and not telling him to even look at the ridiculousness about Sonia and the insult to my character.
That he’d believe I slept around and tried to pass another man’s child off as his.
Anger about that will come. There’s just no space for it at this moment.
He offers no defense. No spin.
The honest answer for once, dropped flat between us in a hospital corridor like a body.
