(Sonia)
The heavy thud of the front door closing is the best sound I’ve heard in weeks.
I stand in the kitchen, listening to the silence of the penthouse.
I wait another full minute, just to be sure she didn’t forget her keys or suddenly grow a spine and come back to yell at me.
She doesn’t. She’s gone.
I let out a laugh.
It bubbles up from my chest, loud and bright in the empty room.
That was almost too easy.
Natasha is so predictable.
She spends all her time preening about being the smartest person in the room, but one look at me in his shirt and she just folded.
She grabbed her sick kid and ran away with her tail tucked between her legs.
Her overnight bag is still in the guest room. I’m guessing she’s not coming back for it.
Her crap in the bathroom is hardly worth making the trip for.
I turn around and walk back down the hall.
It’s genuinely annoying that I have to pack everything back up.
I put real effort into staging the bathroom, and she didn't even make it past the kitchen island to see it.
I walk in and sweep my moisturizer and lipstick off the counter, dumping them back into my bag.
I snatch my green silk robe off the hook on the back of the door.
Such a waste of a good prop.
I cross the hall into Chase’s bedroom and pull his white dress shirt over my head with genuine sorrow.
I want to keep wearing it.
The cotton smells like him. Cedar and expensive laundry detergent.
I put it back in his closet exactly where I found it, making sure the wooden hangers are evenly spaced.
I slip my underwear and dress back on and smooth down the fabric.
I know the math here. I know what I just did is a spectacular gamble.
If Natasha picks up her phone right now and tells Chase what she just saw, I’m finished.
He would banish me.
He wouldn't even yell.
He’d use that icy register I hate so much and freeze me out of his life forever, and there wouldn't be a single thing I could do to manipulate my way back in.
I’m betting everything on Natasha having too much pride to admit she’s upset at the thought of me in Chase’s bed.
And I know I’m right.
She’d rather choke than let Chase know my presence here got under her skin.
She won’t ask him for an explanation because asking means she cares.
I think she’s going to ice him out completely.
She’ll start fighting for custody again and burn his life down, and Chase won't have the slightest clue why she suddenly went nuclear.
