(Sonia)
Eleanor used to care.
Two weeks ago she was asking about my therapy appointments, patting my hand, and making me tea herself.
She was solicitous to a fault.
This morning, she didn’t even look up from her iPad when I walked into the dining room.
She told the housekeeper she could start clearing the dishes before I’d even filled my plate.
My tears don't work anymore. That currency is totally dead.
And I’ve obviously outstayed my welcome here.
I stand in the massive, drafty hallway of the Warren estate, listening to the silence.
Chase moved to the city and left me out here to slowly freeze to death under his mother's absolute zero stare.
Being soft and compliant isn’t working. I need to get back to doing what I do best.
If he refuses to acknowledge me, fine. I’ll force the issue.
If he won't get rid of her, I have to do it myself.
She’s the only obstacle between me and Chase and the perfect future.
I still have access to the shared calendar Chase's assistant manages.
Natasha is taking the brat to the clinic for early morning tests.
Chase has an eight a.m. board meeting. The apartment is empty.
I pack my things and leave quietly.
The concierge at the St. Jude high-rise is a twenty-something kid in a cheap suit.
I flash the security clearance card Chase gave me for entering the estate. Proving I’m a member of the inner circle.
I lean on the desk, smile like I own the building, and lower my voice.
"I'm setting up a surprise for him," I say.
The kid takes one look at my cleavage and practically trips over himself to buzz me up.
People always believe you if you have enough confidence.
I step off the elevator directly into the penthouse.
I don't just snoop. I invade.
I walk into the Chase’s bedroom and trail my hand over the high thread-count duvet, feeling the silkiness of it.
I cross the hall to the guest room.
A bassinet sits in the corner and an overnight bag is unzipped on the floor.
She’s planning on staying over tonight. We’ll see about that.
I walk into the attached bathroom and sneer at the glass shelf.
A single bottle of boring, unscented moisturizer.
A cheap plastic comb.
