(Chase)
Meeting James Bailey unsettles me in a way I’m not used to.
"Mr. Warren," he says, offering his hand as he walks into the exam room. "I’m Dr. Bailey."
I take it. "Chase."
His grip is firm.
Looking at his face sets off a low, irritating alarm in the back of my skull.
There’s something about the architecture of his jaw. The weary set of his eyes.
He carries some strange familiarity that I can’t place.
I run through my mental catalog.
A board member. A rival firm. A country club.
Nothing fits.
The recognition is older than that.
It’s buried under years of dirt, landing like a hook in my subconscious and dragging at something heavy.
I glance at Natasha.
She’s standing next to the exam table, posture rigid, refusing to look at Bailey.
Bailey is entirely focused on Lily.
He checks her vitals.
He discusses renal drainage and kidney function with competence.
I listen, nodding when required, but I keep watching the side of his face.
The irritation in my skull turns into a dull ache.
"We’ll schedule the next ultrasound for Thursday," Bailey says. “If there are any problems, day or night, don’t hesitate to call.
He doesn't linger.
He updates the chart on his tablet and steps out of the room.
"You don't like him," I say.
Natasha picks up the diaper bag, slinging the strap over her shoulder.
"He's competent and supposedly very good at kidney problems. That’s all that matters."
Thirty minutes later, we’re back in my apartment.
Lily goes down for a nap and when I walk back into the lounge, I find Natasha zipping up her overnight bag.
I stop at the edge of the marble island. "What are you doing?"
"Going back to the townhouse."
She doesn't look up.
"Lily is asleep. She won’t wake up until tomorrow morning."
It’s true. The shot they give her usually puts her out for the night, but I still don’t want Natasha to leave.
I step closer. "Stay."
The zipper mechanism clinks against the canvas and she finally looks at me.
Her eyes are exhausted, and the patience she usually forces into her voice is entirely gone.
