Chapter 10 The Grandfather
(Natasha)
Nathanial’s tall shadow falls over our table.
Sonia walks closely behind him. Her hand grips his sleeve again, like she’s five.
When she sees who my dinner partner is, the sinug look on her face turns into deep anger.
She forces a tight smile.
“Gloria,” Sonia says with fake sweetness. “What a surprise.”
Gloria doesn’t even blink. She slowly takes a sip of her wine and completely ignores the younger woman.
The dismissal is very obvious.
Clearing his throat, Nathaniel breaks the heavy silence.
“Celebrating a milestone, Ms. Kelly?” he asks.
His tone is polite but he’s clearly looking for information.
I don’t give him the satisfaction of a response. I just lift my chin and offer a quiet, blank smile instead.
Nathanial pauses, staring at my face for a second too long.
A strange flash of emotion crosses his usually expressionless face.
He blinks, and his strict control slips just a little bit.
“It’s strange,” he murmurs, losing his sharp tone.
“When you smile like that, you look just like my sister.”
Frowning slightly, I feel confused.
Sonia is standing right next to him. Why wouldn’t he just say I remind him of Sonia?
Before I can figure it out, Nathanial regains his focus.
“Enjoy your evening. There won’t be much to celebrate once Chase and I convince Bauer to sign with us.”
He gives a quick nod. Then he turns around and guides an angry Sonia toward a table at the back of the restaurant.
Watching them walk away, I turn back to my friend.
“That was odd. Why didn’t he just say my smile reminded him of Sonia’s?”
Gloria’s expression turns serious.
“Because he wasn’t talking about Sonia. He had another sister. I never met her, but he talked about her constantly when we were together. Her memory still haunts him.”
I store that strange piece of information away and decide to focus on my own problems.
The Morton family is clearly messy, but I have my own battles to win.
“Speaking of the past,” Gloria says smoothly.

She pulls a silver folder from her bag that looks very different from our business files, and slides it across the
table.
“I made a few calls to a specialist in Switzerland. There’s a new medicine on the market to treat your illness.”
I open the folder and frown at the medical terms.
“It’s a great improvement on the previous drug,” Gloria explains quietly.
“It treats your condition and also repairs the damage caused by the heavy hormone drugs you had to take before. Best of all, it’s completely safe and even good for pregnant women. You can start taking it right away.”
Real hope builds in my chest as I look at the test results.
The old drugs saved my life, but they changed my body completely.
The hormones left me swollen, tired, and looking like a different person.
Getting my real face and body back sounds amazing.
“Thank you, Gloria,” I whisper. I close the file and feel incredibly grateful.
Looking up, my eyes drift past her shoulder to the table where Nathanial and Sonia are sitting.
A third person joins them, and I nearly gasp.
An older man with a straight back and a silver cane sits down in the booth.
Elias Warren. Chase’s grandfather.
Elias is the head of the Warren empire.

He’s also the only person in that terrible family who respected my mind instead of worrying about my background.
When he found out about the pregnancy, he forced Chase to marry me, completely ignoring his daughter-in- law’s complaints.
Seeing him eating with Nathanial and Sonia makes me very suspicious though.
Chase probably knows nothing about this meeting. If he did he would have been here.
Is his own grandfather secretly pushing him out of the partnership?
I need a moment to think about this new development.
Excusing myself, I walk to the bathroom.
Holding the edge of the sink, I stare at my pale face in the mirror.
Splashing cold water on my wrists helps a little. But when I turn to leave, a skinny woman blocks the door.
Sonia steps forward, venom flashing in her eyes.
I try to walk past her, refusing to play her game. But her hand shoots out, and she grabs my wrist painfully.
