Rejected and Pregnant I Fled The Pack (Evelyn and Damon) novel Chapter 136

Chapter 136

“That sounds reasonable,” Robert said, something hopeful entering his tired expression. “Though I understand the difficulty of actually implementing it, given how genuinely dangerous continued complacency could prove.”

“Balanced vigilance,” Damon said slowly, working through the concept. “Maintaining actual security measures while also protecting our own mental and emotional wellbeing, rather than allowing constant hypervigilance to entirely consume every aspect of daily life.”

“Exactly,” I confirmed.

We sat together for a while longer, working through practical ideas-specific times when we might genuinely relax the constant checking and monitoring, activities we could still safely enjoy despite the ongbing threat, ways of maintaining necessary caution without allowing fear to entirely dominate every moment.

Callum arrived that evening with another update, his expression carrying the same frustrated exhaustion I imagined mirrored all of ours.

“Still nothing concrete,” he said, settling heavily into the remaining chair. “We’ve expanded the search radius considerably, coordinated with several allied packs for additional resources, and she remains frustratingly elusive.

“Any theories about how she’s managing this,” Robert asked.

“Several,” Callum said. “Given her fifteen years within pack structure, she likely has considerable knowledge of remote territories, potential hiding spots most searchers wouldn’t necessarily consider. She might also have outside resources, connections beyond pack territory that we haven’t fully mapped yet.”

“What about Charlotte’s offer,” I said suddenly, remembering the sanctuary offer from Ashford territory weeks earlier. “Could Ashford pack potentially help with the search, offer resources or expertise we haven’t yet utilized?

Damon glanced at me, something considering in his expression. “That’s actually a good thought. I hadn’t considered reaching out to them for this specific purpose.”

“Worth exploring,” Callum agreed. “Additional resources, fresh perspective, potentially useful given how thoroughly our current approach has apparently failed to actually locate her.”

“I’ll reach out to Charlotte directly,” I offered. “See if their pack might be willing to assist, given everything they’ve already expressed about wanting to support us.”

Damon nodded, some genuine hope visible in his tired expression at the possibility of fresh resources and perspective potentially breaking through our current, frustrating stalemate.

Robert shifted slightly in his chair, exhaustion visibly overtaking him now that the evening had stretched later, and I noticed the particular strain visible around his eyes, the physical toll this ongoing crisis was clearly continuing to exact on his still-fragile recovery.

“You should rest,” I said gently. “This conversation can continue tomorrow, once you’ve actually had proper sleep.

He nodded, though reluctance was evident in the movement, some old, familiar resistance to acknowledging his own limitations still apparently present despite weeks of gradually learning to accept help more readily.

“Thank you,” he said quietly, standing carefully with Damon’s assistance. “For continuing to include me in these discussions, despite my physical limitations.”

“Of course,” Damon said, helping him toward his room. “You’re still genuinely part of this family, part of navigating whatever comes next.”

Once he’d settled for the night, Damon returned to the living room, exhaustion evident in every line of his own posture, and I moved to embrace him, needing the physical reassurance despite everything still frightening and unresolved.

“I hate watching him suffer through this,” Damon said quietly, into my hair. “Genuinely, thoroughly hate it. He’s supposed to be healing, and instead he’s stuck in this constant state of fear and stress that’s actively working against his recovery.”

“I know,” I said softly. “But we’re doing everything we reasonably can. The security measures, the search efforts; now potentially reaching out to Ashford for additional resources. We can’t fully control the timeline of when this actually resolves, only continue doing our best to protect everyone while we wait for that resolution.”

He held me close, and I felt some of the day’s accumulated tension gradually easing, though underlying worry remained present regardless, both of us understanding the genuine, exhausting weight of continued uncertainty stretching indefinitely ahead of us.

“I’ll message Charlotte tonight,” I said, pulling back slightly. “See if Ashford might genuinely be willing to help.”
