Chapter 49
Famous last words. He could never have anticiapted what happened next.
Hades opened his mouth to argue. The sound of an arrow whizzing caught all our attention. We ducked, and the arrow hit the front of the limousine, implanting itself.
What the fuck? The arrow was made of silver. This alone was suspicious. Hades’ next words confirmed my worst fears.
“Hunters,” Hades roared, “quick, get down. Aeress stay with Raven!”
“Fucking great,” Aeress muttered as the boys began to shift, “the last goddamn thing we need.”
Hunters were humans, but trained to kill shifters. They were ruthless and didn’t care whether they killed men, women, or children. They believed all of our kind were disgusting and nothing more than monsters.
“You should shift too,” I told her, still ducking low behind the limousine, “help the men.”
Hades and Jackson had already split up, heading in the direction the arrow had come from.
“What about you?” Aeress looked hesitant, biting her lip as she glanced at me, “I’m sure that they wanted
me to remain with you.”
“I can protect myself. Stay here if you want, but we’re both sitting ducks at the moment. Better to be on
the offence then defence.”
It was kill or be killed. I had no sympathies for the hunters. They made a living killing the innocent with no regard for anybody but themselves and their despicable beliefs. They were the monsters, not us.
“True. But what if you get hurt?” she protested, still doubtful.
I was pissed but wise enough not to give myself away. Right now, I wanted him to think I was nothing more than a vulnerable girl. He, like all the other men in my life, had assumed I was unable to protect myself, simply because I had no wolf. It rankled.
He laughed. “I like a girl with a sense of humour. You think I can’t detect that you’re an anomaly? I can tell just by looking at you. I’ve been a hunter for a long time,” he added with pride, “killed a lot of shifters and anomalies. You’re going to be easy pickings,” he sneered and licked his lips, eyeing me with a hunger that made me uncomfortable.
“Then why even bother talking with me?” I asked, continuing to eye him with misgiving, “Why not just kill me right here and now?”
“Because you’re a shifter. You’re an abomination. You don’t deserve to live amongst humans,” he scoffed and then slowly licked his lips, “don’t worry, sweetheart, I’ll make it quick once I’m finished having my fun with you.”
So, I was an abomination but one he wanted to fuck. Make it make sense, I thought darkly. He stepped closer and I got into a defensive position, making him grin even wider.
“Let’s see what you’ve got, little lady,” he smirked, “I’m game if you are.”
“Fine, but don’t go crying to your mummy when you lose,” I mocked, and that was it, he roared with anger and started towards me.
I had provoked the bear.
