Chapter 295
“Don’t even think about it,” I growled. “Do you have any idea how worried I’ve been? How concerned? I thought I lost you, Asher,” I confessed, “and I’ve been blaming myself every minute you’ve been unconscious.”
“Oh, Aaron,” her voice was thick with emotion, “this isn’t your fault. If only I could remember….” she trailed off.
I carefully put her in the passenger seat and helped her buckle in.
“Don’t try. You heard what the doctor said. I don’t want you to hurt yourself trying,” I warned, and she sighed, leaning back in the chair, a look of obstinacy on her face.
Cute.
She saw me looking and scowled, making me smile even wider.
I’d missed this. Her little hints of stubbornness, her quirky traits. Her endearing personality.
I slowly closed the door and tapped my hands on the steering wheel, lost in thought.
Asher, to her credit, remained silent, anticipating that something heavy was weighing on me.
I debated inwardly with myself. My wolf remained silent, not wanting to be put in the middle, although I suspected he did in fact, agree with my plan.
It was wrong.
I had no right to do it to her.
She had just gotten out of the hospital.
We hadn’t even left the parking lot yet.
I wasn’t giving her a choice if I followed through with what I was thinking.
But then I remembered the struggle to find her. The struggle to pick up her scent. The inability to feel what she was feeling.
The fear. The panic. The desperation as I searched.
“Damnit,” I muttered.
She put a gentle hand on my arm as I turned my head to look at her.
“Something’s wrong, isn’t it? What is it that’s making you frown like this?” she asked softly.
I closed my eyes and exhaled slowly, reopened them, and then leaned down, my lips gently pressing against her as she gave a small gasp of surprise.
I was gentle. I pressed against her, feeling the softness of her lips, losing myself. She reciprocated and I deepened the kiss, listening to the sounds of her small moans as I proved to her just how much I cherished her.
I could have kissed her forever, tasting the sweetness of her mouth and breathing in her scent.
“Aaron,” she breathed, her eyes sparkling.
I couldn’t afford to hesitate any longer.
It was now or never.
I paused for half a moment and then made up my mind, praying Asher would understand, or at least forgive me, even if I didn’t deserve it.
I reminded myself it was necessary and for her own good.
That’s how I justified what I was about to do.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered as she looked at me, bewildered, and then I bent my head again, aiming for the nape of her neck.
I heard her give a sharp cry of pain as I bit into her shoulder, hard, drawing blood, before rearing back and licking her wound closed.
Her own canines grew out as an automatic reaction, and before she could pull away, before she could object, I pulled her head down and forced her to bite me and lick the wound closed.
It was practically a reflex, but it didn’t make it any better.
Once she pulled away, I spared a look at her and flinched as I saw the look of betrayal on her face.
It was too late for regrets now.
