Chapter 259
Marissa clenched her jaw, conflicting emotions appearing on her face.
“Marissa,” I tried to grab her, but she moved forward, a look of determination on her face.
“I agree to the terms, but you will release the antidote as soon as I’m in your grasp, or no deal.”
“Marissa, no,” I roared, “I’ll give my life instead. Let her and Hades live.”
MaryAnne laughed.
“Such commitment and dedication from both of you. But I only require one of you, and to be honest,” her eyes gleamed as she stared pointedly at Marissa, “I would rather have the one who has betrayed me the most, although I’m not opposed to killing both of you.”
Marissa moved, stepping carefully over bodies on the floor to make a straight path towards a patiently waiting MaryAnne, who held the antidote up as an enticement.
I made to move forward, and Hades grabbed my arm, shaking his head.
“You’ll only put your entire pack in danger if you try to stop her. Have faith in your mate,” he murmured low enough that only I could hear.
“Are you crazy? MaryAnne’s going to kill her.”
I tried to yank my arm away, but he held tight.
I went to shift, and he shook his head at me.
“There are still remnants of the chemicals in the air. You want to end up like your men,” he nodded at the ground, “or do you want to be smart about this and find a way to save everybody, including your mate?”
Marissa was almost there now. Just inches away from a gloating MaryAnne.
“Release the antidote now. You know as well as I do that I can’t escape being this close to you. I want to see you uphold your part of the bargain.”
MaryAnne wavered, but she was desperate to get her hands on Marissa, so she threw the other canister to the ground, and black smoke filled the air, slowly moving over the bodies, drifting in the wind.
“They’ll wake up in two hours,” MaryAnne said flatly, her eyes never looking away from Marissa. “But I advise you not to shift because I’ll kill you before you manage to finish the transition.”
Marissa nodded, walking closer.
I wrenched my arm away from Hades and began to run, but it was too late. MaryAnne moved so fast she was a blur, and suddenly she stood there, a knife pressed to Marissa’s neck, her other arm wrapped tightly around her waist.
-“Move, and I’ll slice her throat right in front of you,” she warned.
I stopped short.
Marissa looked remarkably calm, her eyes fixed directly in front of her.
“Take me instead,” I roared, “let my mate go.”

“Do you think I gave up everything valuable to simply let my most prized possession get away from me?” she said, twisting her lips, “Do you have any idea how painful it is to have your soul ripped away from your body? It’s like being torn apart, limb from limb, until there’s nothing left but your heart, which has stopped beating. Face it, you can’t beat me. None of you can.”
“Your heart still beats,” Marissa’s voice was low, “I can hear it. It’s faint but it’s there. You’re not invincible,” she continued as MaryAnne stiffened, “you’re merely somebody to feel pity for.”
MaryAnne pressed the knife deeper into her neck.
“Keep talking, and I’ll be forced to end you right now. I have plans for you Marissa. I’m going to make you feel the pain I’ve been feeling. I’m going to make you wish you’d never been born. I’m going to make it so that you beg for my forgiveness. You’re coming with me,” she snarled and gripped my mate tighter, dragging her slowly backwards.
Hades and I followed. Marissa didn’t move; she didn’t blink.
I worried she might have given up.
There was a car waiting, doors open.
“You think I won’t find you!” I roared, “You think this will be enough to stop me coming after you? I thought you would fly or some shit,” I said mockingly, “maybe shift, but you can’t, can you?” I said with realization, “or you would have already. You would have torn Marissa into pieces right in front of me. You’re basically human,” I breathed.
“Human with superpowers. Still strong enough to take on all three of you and survive,” she scoffed. “Those fucking witches decided I hadn’t given them enough, decided my wolf would be a suitable exchange for the power they had given me. They were afraid I would turn on them,” she snapped, “afraid I would kill them, so they weakened me for their own selfish purposes. Once I’m done here, they’re next,” she vowed, her voice breaking.
“I’m afraid that won’t be happening,” a voice spoke from behind her and I stared in confusion as a large group of women came stalking out of the trees.
