“Damien,” I almost screamed, “I can’t take much more.”

He kissed me on the forehead.

“You’re not her, Marissa. You’ve changed. Besides,” he added as I looked at him, my lips parted slightly, “do you think I would ever let you hurt our child?”

I slowly shook my head, feeling somewhat relieved.

Damien would never allow me to hurt our children. I didn’t want to hurt them. In fact, I wanted to be the opposite of my mother or MaryAnne, as I was starting to think of her as. I wanted to love my children and allow them to experience the type of childhood I never got to have.

“Sleep,” Damien murmured.

“But we need to prepare, we have to make sure we’re ready,” I protested even as I yawned.

“We will be. We know when she’s coming, and I already have allies coming,” Damien murmured, “being sleep deprived will do nobody any good.”

I closed my eyes obediently, but my mind would not stop contemplating the worst scenarios.

I just wanted this to be over. I just wanted my happily ever after.

I would do everything in my power to make it happen.
