“I knew the arrow was poisoned. But you were willing to protect me despite everything. If you hadn’t pretended to fight with me, my own mate would have killed me. Besides, you have Hades, whereas I have nobody to miss me when I’m gone.”

Her tone was nonchalant.

“Every life matters, even yours,” Raven said, slightly angry, “it’s not something to just be thrown away, Marissa. Still, I’m more grateful than you could ever imagine.”

“Where am I supposed to go? What am I supposed to do now?” Marissa blurted out, her frustration rising,” There’s no pack to go back to. I have no mate. The only choice going forward is to become a rogue.”

“There are other choices, Marissa.”

“No, there isn’t. No pack in this country would be foolish enough to take me in. Not after being associated with hunters who already exterminated two packs and tried to do the same with yours.”

“You could live in the human towns,” Raven suggested softly, “find a job, start over. A clean slate might be exactly what you need.”

“Human town,” Marissa stopped short, mulling it over in her mind, “somewhere new. But the council doesn’t like shifters mixing with humans.”

“Because it poses risks to humans finding out what we are. But in your case, if somebody were to speak on your behalf, they might just be willing to allow it. I don’t think you would divulge your a shifter and reveal yourself to humans.”

“Why are you doing this?” Marissa said tightly, “You could have just let me fend for myself. Rid yourself of me. If 1 were in your shoes….”

“I thought about it, but I’m not that kind of person. I’ve made my peace with you. We might not be biological sisters or twins, but we do share a connection, no matter how small it is. I won’t have killing you, either intentionally or not, be on my conscience.”

“How long do I have?” Marissa whispered, “Before I have to make a decision and leave?”

“You need to stay under observation for at least two more days before they will discharge you. Your wolf is slowly ridding your body of the poison left, but it means it’s weakened at the same time.”

“I’ll be back to check on you again. Get some rest,” she urged.

“You don’t have to…” Marissa protested and then stopped herself from blurting out the rest.

She wanted to see Raven again, if only to say goodbye. To wish her well on her life with Hades and apologize again. In another lifetime, they would have been close, like sisters, but she’d allowed her mother to infect her with her poison and turn everything to rot inside her.

She slowly lay back down, her head resting on the pillow, her eyes fluttering closed.

“I’ll be back, even if it’s just to say goodbye,” Raven murmured, “and I don’t hate you, Marissa, not anymore.

Those words were enough to send Marissa into a deep sleep as Raven left the room, her footsteps fading off into the distance.
