Chapter 191

“Second trap down.”

“How many do you think we’ve taken down?” I asked quietly.

“At least thirty, maybe more. They can’t have a huge group. Not unless they combined with another group. Still, their numbers are impressive,” Hades muttered.

“But will this be enough to seriously lessen them?” I said, looking at him worriedly.

“Honey, don’t question yourself. You’ve done all you can. This whole setup, this whole traps thing was because of you. You thought of this, and so far the pack has been safe. No one is hurt. By the time they make it here, their forces will have dwindled. That in itself is giving us an advantage,” he told me, his eyes glinting.

I marvelled at how calm he was. I was skilled at fighting but I’d only ever fought against a handful of opponents at a time. If a large group attacked at once, it was highly probable that I could be hurt or even killed. I also worried about Aeress but she’d been stubborn and insisted on fighting to save the pack, despite all our objections. She refused to let her mate fight alone and I could understand it.

Shouts and screams sounded from the forest, and a lot of swearing. Clearly, this was not going as the hunters had anticipated. I smirked, waiting for the next trap. It was close. I could smell them coming closer, trying not to crinkle my nose at the disgusting smell of them drifting towards me. Their scent was repulsive, but I could also smell the fear radiating from them. They were frightened and didn’t know what to expect next. Too bad we weren’t done with them yet.

They’d given up trying to be quiet. There was no point now that we knew they were there. Still, their confidence astounded me. They truly thought that they could still defeat us, but we were about to prove them wrong.

I nodded at Jackson and Aeress, who slipped away. Just when the hunters thought they had reached the boundary of the forest and about to head onto the grounds, the last trap was sprung. Several screamed as they fell through the large hole in the ground, which had been cleverly disguised to blend in with the surroundings. I winced as they bodies impaled on the spikes, but reminded myself not to show any mercy. I shifted, Hades doing the same. It was time to take the fight to them and end this, once and for all. Whatever happened, we would fight until our last breaths.

With any luck, we might be able to eradicate this large group of hunters once and for all, not just for our sake but for the other shifters who would always be in danger from them.
