Chapter 46 In Process

Students formed orderly Times at each of the ten stations, moving up in groups of ten at a time.
Under the guidance of the supervising teachers, each student pressed their palm into the carved handprint on the surface of their designated Awakening Guidance Pillar.
Then it happened.
All ten pillars lit up in nearly the same breath, each one pulsing with a faint, fleeting glow.
The ten students standing at the pillars jolted, just briefly, like something electric had passed through them from the ground up.
And then it was over.
Everyone waited.
Around thirty seconds passed in perfect, breathless silence.
Three of the ten pillars began to shine with distinct colors. One blazed white, one burned a cool pale blue, and one radiated a deep, luminous violet.
One C–rank. One B–rank. One A–rank.
The entire field erupted.
An A–rank showed up in the very
first group
of ten.
The three students standing beneath their glowing pillars broke into wide, trembling smiles.
Somewhere on each of their bodies, a Divine Sigil pulsed with soft, shimmering light.
The A–rank student looked like someone who’d just had the universe handed to them, because they had.
Their fate was different now. Entirely and permanently different.
The seven who stood without any light on their pillars dropped their gazes and said nothing. The loss settled over them like a heavy, quiet thing.
A teacher’s voice rang out sharply. “Awakened, proceed to registration. Next group!”
Up on the platform, Rufus smiled. “Three successful awakenings in the first group. That’s a good sign.”
The officials around him nodded and murmured in agreement.
Without quite meaning to, Rufus let his gaze drift toward where Steven was standing. The corner of his mouth curved slightly.
Will the kid awaken a Divine Sigil today?
If he did, his place on Team Ashen was as good as locked.

Here’s hoping he had good luck on his side.
Steven was still watching the proceedings when he felt a pair of eyes on him.
He looked toward the platform. The principal was watching him.
He figured it was probably just a coincidence
The ceremony kept moving, group after group, in an endless, grinding procession that was equal parts excitement and dread.
Everyone still waiting felt that particular kind of tension that came from wanting something desperately while being terrified of the answer.
Some of the students who failed to awaken simply couldn’t hold themselves together.
Tears came, and not quietly, and it happened again and again throughout the morning.
Some of those people were the most dedicated fighters in the school. They were students who pushed themselves harder in training than anyone else. They were students who had A+ in combat classification, and yet the Awakening still didn’t come.
Ten people per round.
Sometimes an entire group of ten came and went without a single pillar lighting up.
Darlene was also A–rank, but her attribute leaned toward restoration, which meant green light emerged whenever she channeled her sigil’s power.
The rank colors were fixed and universal. There were only six, and everyone knew them.
The attribute colors were secondary and varied enormously from person to person.
And the attributes themselves were staggeringly complex in their variety.
Earth, wood, water, fire, metal. Wind, rain, lightning, thunder. Pure strength–type, speed–type, defense- type, healing–type, weapon–type.
The list went on and on.
But there was one category that had never once appeared in any recorded Awakening.
Beast–type.
That gap was something Steven turned over constantly in the back of his mind and still couldn’t resolve. It was a secret he carried alone, something he wasn’t ready to expose to the world.
The attribute a person’s Divine Sigil carried also shaped their role in the larger system, the function they’d serve in the military structure or in an Awakened Squad, the position they’d fill when everything was on the line.
A single Divine Sigil could also carry more than one attribute. Two, three, or in rarer cases even more.
But more wasn’t necessarily better.
Multiple attributes meant diluted power, spread too thin to master any one channel.

Picture a twenty–ounce bottle. Fill it with a single pure element and it holds twenty ounces of force. Split it between two elements, water and oil, and neither one fills the bottle, You end up with less of both, and mastery of neither.
