She walked over to the fire.

And began roasting it with an expression of pure, undisguised glee.

The bird was, to be fair, unusually large.

It didn’t look like a domestic chicken. More like some kind of exotic fowl.

A peacock, if he wasn’t mistaken.

Her stunning face, paired with that hungry, eager expression, made for an almost surreal sight.

She was even humming to herself. “Roasted wings, my favorite treat…”

She rubbed her palms together.

“Little birdie, sorry about this, but you’re about to become dinner.”

She threw herself into the roasting with complete, single–minded focus.

Of all the things in the world, food was the one thing that could never be neglected.

She was blissfully lost in her cooking, deaf to the world outside.

Just as he’d predicted–it had gone to hunt.

Once it was a couple of miles away, Steven didn’t hesitate.

His heart was pounding with anticipation.

He blurred forward and snatched the fruit with one hand.

He tore it free in an instant.

Roar!

It threw back its head and let out a furious howl.

It pounded its chest in a frenzy.

Feet slammed into the earth.
