Chapter 236 Rejected

“I need everyone to keep my rank between us. Please don’t mention it to anyone outside this squad.

“If the military finds out…”

Steven didn’t finish the sentence, but he didn’t need to.

Everyone around the fire understood immediately and gave quiet, decisive nods.

Mason’s voice was steady and certain. “You have our word. Every one of us keeps this locked down, no exceptions.”

Steven nodded his thanks.

Peter tilted his head with a thoughtful look. “People are going to find out eventually, though, aren’t they?”

Steven kept his voice even. “Wouldn’t you rather stay off the Godslayer Order’s hunt list for as long as possible?”

Peter gave a slow, conceding nod.

Alan’s tone shifted into something absolute. “This stays within the squad. No one outside this fire ever hears about it. This is our secret, and one day it may be our greatest advantage.”

Every member of the squad nodded with the gravity the moment deserved.

Peter turned back to Steven with relentless curiosity. “Alright, but what was that white vapor coming off you? Your combat power spiked completely out of nowhere.”

Steven shook his head. “Don’t ask me about my abilities. It’s not that I want to hide things from everyone here, it’s just better if fewer people know the details.”

Peter’s eyes went wide with indignation. “I’m the one who brought you into this squad.”

Darlene reached over and smacked his arm.

“Are you done?” she said flatly.

“He already told you it’s confidential.”

Peter laughed sheepishly and dropped it, clearly outmatched.

Then Olivia’s expression shifted into something deeply unsettled.

“We’ve been denied.”

Every head turned toward her.

Brows furrowed all around the fire.

Alan’s voice came out sharp and controlled. “What happened?”

Olivia pulled up the transmission and read it aloud.

“The military is ordering us to continue the mission. They’ve also issued a new tasking, classified at danger level 5.

“Regardless of casualties sustained, we are to proceed. And as of now, returning to Rowenville isn’t an option. The city has been completely encircled by a massive beast army.”

The words landed like a detonation.

“It’s encircled?”

Olivia nodded, her expression grim.

“The beast forces came from nowhere and surrounded the entire perimeter around Rowenville. They haven’t launched an attack. They’re just holding the ring.”

Steven’s voice came out cold and immediate. “The Godslayer Order is cutting off our escape route. This is exactly what they do.”

The faces around the fire turned hard and dark all at once.

“Those monsters!” Mason said, his voice low and furious.

Peter’s anger came out rougher and louder. “They’re trying to wipe out every single one of us in one sweep?”

It was only now that Steven fully understood why Operation Moonfall had always been the most brutal chapter in everything he remembered from his previous life.

The Godslayer Order prepared this with absolute thoroughness. Their intention from the very beginning was to make sure none of the people who left Rowenville on this mission ever came back.

Edric and Nicole both wore expressions that rarely appeared on their faces. The controlled composure each of them usually carried was cracking at the edges.

The scaling worked on a tenfold system through levels one and two, but at level 4? The curve broke into something different.

That meant a single level 6 beast crystal was worth approximately one hundred million low–level divine crystals.

This one mission reward was the equivalent of killing a level 6 beast.

The thought alone was enough to make every nerve in the body light up.

Nobody could contain the feeling completely.

It ran through them like heat, restless and electric.

Darlene pulled everyone back to the practical question. “What exactly is the Celestial Core?”

Even Steven found himself somewhat uncertain on this point.

The Celestial Core.

It was something the military valued at one hundred million divine crystals. Whatever it was, it wasn’t simple.

Alan was quiet for a moment before answering.

“Think of it as an artificial intelligence mainframe. Something like a master data chip.

Whoever holds the Celestial Core can construct a top–tier defense infrastructure, enough to build and sustain an entire mid–sized city from the ground up.

“It contains complete architectural and operational data for a mid–sized city, Awakened ability profiles, and a massive combat art archive, with entries reaching up to level 6 at the highest tier.”

The revelation landed on everyone with equal force.

Olivia added one more piece. “The Celestial Cors is actually the collapsed data core from Villeurfort, the mid–sized city that fell ten years ago.

“If Rowenville recovers this, our entire defensive and combat readiness infrastructure gets a significant upgrade. And the Celestial Core would allow us to connect with Draconia Surveillant directly, opening access to a much higher tier of authorization and resources.”
