Chapter 10 Because I Want You to Protect Me Someday!

Inside the principal’s office.

Principal Rufus Slater was a thin, middle–aged man with an obvious air of wealth around him. Dressed in a formal suit, he smiled warmly while shaking hands with the two men in front of him.

He never expected the famous Awakened Squad of Rowenville to actually visit their school.

Rufus chuckled cheerfully. “So what brings two big shots like you here today?”

The two men across from him looked fairly young, probably only in their 20s.

One of them was Peter, whom Steven met last night.

The other man rarely smiled and looked extremely stern.

He spoke first. “Mr. Slater, we came today because we’d like to pull up a student’s records.”

The moment Rufus heard that, delight immediately appeared on his face.

“Oh? Captain Greenwood, did one of our little geniuses catch your eye?”

Peter remained calm.

Alan Greenwood replied expressionlessly, “We don’t know his name yet. We only have his appearance.”

Rufus laughed. “If someone managed to catch your attention, Captain Greenwood, then it must be one of the few S–rank combat students at our school.

“Come, come, I’ve got all their files right here on my computer. Take a look and see which one it is.”

While pulling up the files, Rufus smiled and asked, “Captain Greenwood, did something happen?”

Alan glanced toward Peter.

Peter smiled and explained, “Mr. Slater, here’s the situation. Last night, beasts invaded the civilian district.

“Two level 1 Bloodfang Rats escaped from the Divine Barrier and caused some trouble. One person died.

“He was the parent of one of your students.”

Rufus frowned slightly.

“None of our S–rank combat students live in the civilian district.”

Peter quickly clarified, “Not her. Another student.

“One of the level 1 Bloodfang Rats was killed by a different student.”

Rufus’s expression instantly changed in shock.

“What?

“A student killed a level 1 Bloodfang Rat?”

Rufus muttered in disbelief, “Even an S–rank student shouldn’t be able to do that, right?”

Peter smiled. “That’s exactly why we came. We want to review the student’s background and temporarily mark him for observation if possible.

“If he fails to awaken a Divine Sigil, we’d still like to send him for special training. With origin crystal technology, he could become an exceptional soldier and possibly join our squad someday.

“And if he successfully awakens, we’d also like to recruit him after he graduates from your Awakened high school.

“We’re just planning ahead.”

Rufus looked overjoyed. “That would be incredible.

“I honestly never expected our school to produce a combat genius like this.

“Come on, take a look and see which student it is.”

Peter leaned closer and glanced at the files.

There were only a handful of S–rank students total.

He shook his head. “None of them.”

Rufus’s expression stiffened. “None of them?”

Peter nodded.

Alan frowned slightly. “You didn’t even ask his name yesterday?”

Peter looked somewhat embarrassed.

Rufus frowned deeply. “That’s impossible. If he’s one of our students, then the only people capable of something like this should be these S–rank students. How could it possibly be someone else?”

Peter thought for a moment.

“Oh! I remember now. I think his name was Steven!”

Peter remembered Bianca calling out Steven’s name right before he passed out.

Rufus searched the name in the school records.

Sure enough, Steven’s profile immediately appeared.

Peter looked excited.

“Yes! That’s him!”

Rufus stared at the screen in disbelief. “Him?

“But he’s only a B.”

Rufus simply couldn’t believe it.

He laughed awkwardly. “Could there be some mistake? His combat rank hasn’t even reached A-

rank.”

Peter smiled and shook his head. “No mistake. It’s definitely him.”

After returning last night, Peter and the others reviewed the surveillance footage from the area.

The combat instincts Steven displayed had clearly interested Alan, making him want to recruit Steven into their squad.

That was why they came here today.

Rufus looked like he’d seen a ghost.

“A B–rank student killed a level 1 Bloodfang Rat?”

The two men ignored his reaction and carefully reviewed Steven’s records instead.

A slight smile finally appeared at the corner of Alan’s mouth as he reached a conclusion.

Peter laughed. “Captain, I barely ever hear you praise anyone. I don’t think you’ve ever praised any of us before.”

Alan shot him a cold glance. “Every one of you acts like a bunch of flashy showboats, terrified people won’t notice how strong you are. Why would I praise that? So your egos can get even bigger?”

Peter laughed awkwardly.

Rufus asked in surprise, “Captain Greenwood, are you saying he’s been hiding his real strength?”

Alan nodded, looking even more satisfied with Steven now.

“At such a young age, yet he isn’t obsessed with fame. Excellent mentality.

“Mr. Slater, I’ll need you to keep an eye on this kid for us. We’ll return on the day of Divine Awakening.”

Rufus was surprised internally, but he still nodded.

“I understand, Captain Greenwood.

“At his age, being able to earn your squad’s recognition already means his future’s limitless.”

Alan nodded and prepared to leave.

Rufus smiled. “Captain Greenwood, why not stay? Their class has combat training this afternoon. You’ve made me curious now. Why don’t we watch together?”

Alan thought about it for a moment before nodding. “Alright. We’ll come back this afternoon.”

“Come on, at least stay for a meal.”

Alan shook his head. “We still have a few things to deal with. Thank you for the offer.”

Rufus nodded helplessly. “Alright, then. I won’t force you to stay. I’ll see you both this afternoon.”

Alan and Peter politely nodded.

After leaving the school.

Bianca stared at him in shock. What kind of move is that?

Bianca panicked slightly. What’s going on with Steven lately?

Bianca rarely came here.

So she simply sat there quietly eating her compressed biscuit by herself.

As she watched Steven’s back, her thoughts drifted again.

She really couldn’t understand why Steven had suddenly started treating her so well.

Before this, they were barely even close.

Is he into me?

No way!

Bianca instantly rejected that idea herself.

Maybe he just saw how miserable my family situation was last night and wanted to help me.

That has to be it.

Lost in thought, Bianca suddenly realized Steven had already returned, carrying two trays of food.

There was meat, vegetables, and even fruit.

The portions weren’t large, but the meals were balanced and nutritious.

Steven directly placed one tray in front of Bianca.

Bianca froze.

“Why did you buy one for me? I already said I’d eat this.”

Steven glanced at her. “You don’t have to eat it. You can leave it there and let it go to waste.”

Steven calmly started eating his own meal.

Students at school were lucky enough to get treatment like this. Once they returned home, not many families could actually afford meat every day.

Humanity was now trapped inside giant steel cities. Farmland was scarce, and resources were precious.

The moment Bianca heard that, she panicked.

“No! You get punished for wasting food. Take it back!”

Steven ignored her completely.

Bianca immediately understood what he meant.

She slowly put away her biscuit and picked up the utensils before taking a small bite.

Her eyes gradually turned red.

It had been such a long time since she’d eaten a meal like this.

“If you keep crying, the food’s gonna turn salty,” Steven said gently, without any teasing in his

tone.

Bianca raised her head and looked at Steven with those reddened eyes.

She looked wronged, guilty, and emotional all at once.

“Why are you being so good to me?

“I–I really don’t have anything to repay you with.”

Steven froze briefly.

After a moment of silence, he reached out and gently wiped the tears from the corner of her

eyes.

“Because I want you to protect me someday.”
