He looked at Scarlett, and his eyes reddened instantly, tears spilling over. He was so overcome that he couldn't get a single word out.
She looked back at him and said, very seriously, "Damian, I don't want to miss out on someone as good as you. And I know it wouldn't be fair to keep you tied to me just because you're wonderful. But I need you to know—I have feelings for you."
As she spoke, she reached up and placed her hand on his cheek, using her thumb to wipe away his tears.
At the same time, her heart fluttered, just as hard as it had back when she first fell for Vincent.
She knew that feeling too well.
Damian took her hand in his and smiled at her, his gaze warm.
Then he opened the first-aid kit and, a little clumsily, cleaned the blood from her cut.
When he was done, he put the kit away in the drawer.
He came back and sat down right beside her.
No sooner had he sat than he reached over, easily lifted her, and settled her on his lap, straddling him. She couldn't look at him. Her cheeks were burning, her whole body hot.
Damian lowered his head and kissed her again.
But this time, he kept it gentle and brief.
When he pulled back, his breathing was heavy against her ear. He asked, "Is this okay?"
Scarlett's heart was racing, but she could feel, clearly, that she wanted this.
So she gave a small nod and said, "Yes."
At that, Damian stood, lifting her with him, and carried her toward the bedroom.
After tonight, she would truly be his.
Her legs wrapped around his waist, her arms looped around his neck. She rested her face against him, breathing in the scent of his body wash.
Afraid she might slip, he kept his hands firmly under her.
He made it to the bedroom, turned on the light with one hand, and hooked the door shut with his foot.
His eyes were bloodshot—restrained, controlled.
But his body was already burning.
He held her gaze as he unbuttoned his own shirt, one button at a time, revealing his honey-toned chest.
He pulled the shirt off and tossed it aside. The muscles of his abdomen were taut, the lines running down past his waistband and out of sight.
He leaned in again, but this time, he didn't rush. He cupped her face in his hands, closed his eyes gently, and said, "Scarlett, I'm asking you one more time. Is this okay?"
Even though his body felt like it was crawling with fire, even though his chest was tight with longing, he held onto his control.
He had always wanted this to be her choice.
Scarlett watched him with his eyes closed, his long lashes trembling. He looked almost scared, his body tensing.
The silence stretched on. Damian thought she was saying no. He opened his eyes and started to apologize. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't—"
But before he could finish, Scarlett pressed her lips to his collarbone. Then she pulled back and said, her voice rough, "Damian. I want this."
She'd hesitated for just a moment, but she'd said yes.
Damian knelt over her, his hands planted on either side of her body, caging her beneath him. He looked down at her, needing to be sure. "Really? You mean it?"
This time, Scarlett didn't hesitate. She lifted herself up, took his face in her hands, and kissed him—pressing her body against his at the same time.
