It was seven in the evening at Haven Hotel.
When Vincent pulled up to the upscale restaurant, a host guided him toward a private dining suite.
The server pushed open the door and gestured him inside. "Right this way, sir."
Vincent nodded and stepped into the room.
Besides Galen Lowell, the overseas businessman he'd arranged to meet, an unexpected guest was already seated—Damian.
Damian sat right beside Galen, both men grinning mid-conversation about some undisclosed topic.
Galen glanced over at the creak of the opening door. "Have a seat, Mr. Stewart."
Vincent hesitated briefly before taking the empty chair on Galen's other side.
He'd come intending to hammer out a lucrative business deal with Galen, and it was clear Damian was there for the exact same reason.
For a long stretch after Vincent sat down, none of the three men spoke a word, locked in an unspoken awkward silence.
The hush only broke when waitstaff rolled in to set the meal on the table, and Galen stood to uncork a bottle of wine.
Damian quickly snatched the bottle out of his hand before Galen could twist the cork free. "You've only just gotten back to Rivergate, Mr. Lowell. Don't trouble yourself with pouring drinks—leave this little chore to me."
Galen let go without argument.
Once the wine was open, Damian filled three wine glasses one by one. He set the first down before Galen, then held the second out toward Vincent.
Vincent rose to accept the drink, yet Damian pulled the glass back out of his reach.
A taunting smirk tugged at Damian's mouth. "You're looking incredibly well-rested, Mr. Stewart. Must be the glow of an upcoming wedding."
He dragged out his words thick with open mockery and sarcasm.
Vincent saw the jab for what it was but couldn't hold back a sharp retort. "You look plenty revitalized yourself, Mr. Langley. Sounds like you've got happy milestones on the horizon too."
The casual business dinner instantly morphed into a bitter verbal sparring match between the two men.
"Absolutely," Damian replied without pause. "I'm about to marry the woman I've spent ages chasing. No wonder I'm in high spirits; most folks would call that a total victory."
Vincent remained standing, his features steadily hardening into a frigid scowl. "Is that so?"
Vincent pretended to focus on picking at his food, seemingly ignoring their call entirely.
But his slow, quiet movements gave him away; he was holding the room quiet on purpose, straining to catch every word Scarlett spoke over the phone.
Damian caught onto Vincent's covert listening in an instant and leaned back with a teasing drawl into the receiver. "You missing me already, honey? You sound all out of breath. Didn't I wear you out enough last night?"
That crude line blocked every last syllable of Scarlett's voice from reaching Vincent's ears.
A sharp, stabbing pain pierced his chest.
Had Damian really spent the previous night with her? Had Scarlett already given herself to him?
Vincent's mind raced, counting the months since he'd last been intimate with Scarlett.
Had she thrown herself into another man's bed that easily?
Damian purred into the phone next, "I'm stuck in a work dinner right now, sweetie. You're this clingy, how am I supposed to handle you?"
"Damian, quit talking nonsense!" Scarlett snapped from the other end of the line.
