With those final words, Vincent ducked down and settled into the car.
Everything was different now. He no longer tended to Sabrina's every little need like he once had.
In years past, he would open her door and fasten her seatbelt without a second thought.
These days, he only did so on random occasions; most of the time, Sabrina climbed into the passenger seat and buckled up all on her own.
She kept trying to console herself that Vincent was swamped with endless company work and too worn out to notice her shifting moods, yet she knew deep down it was nothing but empty lies to comfort her aching heart.
The plain truth was simple—Vincent just did not love her enough.
Once seated, Sabrina pulled the seatbelt across her torso and clicked it shut.
She had no solid clue whether Scarlett had gotten hurt by the bulky, violent woman back inside the theater, yet a vicious secret wish bloomed inside her chest—she hoped that same angry woman had finished Scarlett off entirely.
Only with Scarlett gone could she grab everything she had always craved.
...
A handful of police officers lingered around the mall gates following the sudden violent outburst inside.
Damian helped Scarlett out of the building, then dropped into a squat right in front of her.
Scarlett froze in surprise. "What are you doing?"
Damian glanced over his shoulder at her with a warm grin. "I'm giving you a piggyback ride."
"There's no need," Scarlett hurried to argue. "I just twisted my ankle a little, nothing serious, don't worry over me."
She bent forward, trying to pull him back up to his feet.
Damian refused to stand, instead peering up at her meaningfully. "Honey, if you don't want me to carry you in my arms, hop onto my back quickly."
Scarlett panicked at his teasing threat and scrambled onto his back without delay. She knew perfectly well Damian always kept his word, and a public bridal carry would draw far more unwanted stares than a casual piggyback.
A sly triumphant smirk tugged at Damian's lips the second her weight settled against his spine.
He lifted her effortlessly and started walking slowly. "Comfortable?"
His voice dipped playfully, loaded with hidden double meaning.
Scarlett knew his tricks all too well; nearly every line he spoke came wrapped in a subtle trap, and this question was no exception—it referenced far more than just the ease of riding on his back.
When she stayed quiet for too long, Damian pressed again. "Talk to me, babe."
Damian smiled and pretended to look confused. "How could you forget plans we set as husband and wife?"
Scarlett rested her cheek against his jacket, her voice muffled against his back. "You're not my husband yet."
A gust of wind swept past, scattering half of her words away, so Damian caught only fragments.
He did not push for clarification and instead checked on her. "Are you cold?"
Scarlett shook her head. "Nope."
Damian's laugh deepened once more. "Truly not cold, or are you hoping to spend extra time with your husband?"
Scarlett was at a loss for words.
Was she cold?
Yes, she was freezing.
The temperature in Rivergate had stayed below freezing for days, so it was impossible for her to feel fully warm outdoors.
So, the other reason had to be the truth. But she wasn't about to tell Damian that.
