Scarlett looked at Nolan and said softly, "Nolan, it's going to be okay."
Nolan met her gaze and forced a faint smile onto his face. "Maybe."
The worry weighing on him was impossible to miss. Scarlett reached over and laid her hand gently across his, her voice calm and steady as she repeated, "It really will be okay."
Nolan only smiled quietly and nodded without speaking.
Still, comfort was just comfort. Whatever the truth of his condition was, they would not know until the final test results came back.
The wind across the rooftop had picked up, carrying snow with it, and the freezing air cut through everything around them. Nolan, however, seemed completely numb to the cold.
Scarlett's leg had already started aching faintly, but she forced herself to endure it without saying a word.
Then her phone suddenly rang.
Lowering her eyes to the screen, she was surprised to see Vincent calling.
At this hour, there was only one reason he would contact her.
Vanessa.
Scarlett answered the call, but the second she lifted the phone to her ear, Vincent's cold voice came through immediately.
"Was this your doing?"
Scarlett frowned, unable to follow what he meant. "What are you talking about?"
His voice sounded chillingly calm, the kind of cold that made people uneasy.
"Sabrina was almost assaulted. She jumped into the river trying to protect herself."
Scarlett rolled her eyes instantly and muttered under her breath, "Vincent, are you seriously insane?"
Vincent ignored her reaction completely and continued in a low, threatening voice, "Scarlett, if anything happens to Sabrina, I'll make the entire Theron family pay for it."
Scarlett let out a humorless laugh.
"Oh, give me a break. Every time something happens, you immediately decide I'm behind it. If I actually had that kind of power, do you really think you'd still be refusing to divorce me?"
Not a single word reached him.
Like he had completely lost control, Vincent said coldly, "Scarlett, I mean it."
Then he hung up.
Scarlett stared at the disconnected call, anger surging through her so hard her chest rose and fell unevenly. For a moment, she nearly threw her phone straight off the rooftop.
Seeing how upset she was, Nolan placed a hand lightly against her back and gently rubbed soothing circles there as he asked quietly, "Was that Vincent?"
Scarlett took two deep breaths before finally calming down enough to answer.
"Yeah."
Nolan's voice came out hoarse. "What did he say?"
Even though he had been sitting close to her, the wind outside and the low volume of the call had kept him from hearing anything clearly.
As he approached them, he placed the coat over Scarlett's shoulders and said in a scolding tone, "It's freezing out here. You trying to make your leg hurt again?"
The second he finished speaking, he deliberately squeezed himself between Scarlett and Nolan before sitting down.
Damian usually looked carefree about everything, but whenever it came to Scarlett, he noticed every little detail.
Nolan's feelings for her had never been subtle, and because of that, Damian had no intention of backing down even slightly.
When it came to love, there was only room for one person to win.
Now seated between them, Damian looked entirely comfortable, as though he did not find the situation awkward in the slightest. Instead, he turned toward Scarlett with a teasing smile while she stared back at him, clear irritation mixed into her gaze.
Damian acted as though he saw none of it. Leaning slightly closer, he smiled lazily and asked, "Why are you looking at me like that? What, finally realizing how good-looking I am? Nolan's still sitting right here, you know. At least try not to flirt with me in front of company."
Scarlett immediately looked away, heat rushing to her face.
"Damian, stop messing around."
Nolan's condition was still unknown, and she truly had no mood to joke around.
Damian understood what she was thinking, so he stopped teasing her after that.
Nolan sat quietly beside them. Even with the anxiety weighing heavily on him, watching Damian tease Scarlett so openly still filled him with a deep sense of helplessness and guilt.
He could never be like Damian.
Maybe Scarlett had simply never been meant to belong to him.
