"At fifteen, it's basically gone."
The moment the doctor said that, Thomas went pale. He instinctively staggered back a step, and it wasn't until his shoulders hit the wall that he finally steadied himself.
Seeing the fear written all over his face, the attending physician quickly tried to reassure him. "Mr. Newman, his platelet count is critically low right now, but that doesn't necessarily mean the worst. We'll need to do a bone marrow biopsy before we can know for sure."
Even hearing that, Thomas still let out a long breath. He shook his head slowly before asking in a hoarse voice, "How long before the biopsy results come back?"
"Three days."
The answer made both Thomas and Scarlett tense instantly.
They already knew the situation was dangerous, but having to wait three more days for the final results felt torturous for everyone involved.
...
It was already nine that night when Nolan finally struggled awake.
The first thing he saw was the harsh white ceiling above him. He swallowed dryly, then turned his head slightly, only to realize Scarlett was sitting beside his hospital bed.
For a moment, he honestly thought he was dreaming.
Then Scarlett smiled softly at him and asked, "Nolan, you're awake?"
The sound of her voice finally pulled him back to reality.
His chest tightened as unease settled over him. "Where am I?"
"At the hospital."
It was supposed to be the place Nolan knew best, yet lying there now, everything around him felt strangely unfamiliar.
After a brief silence, the memories from before he collapsed slowly came back to him.
He turned to look at Scarlett again. "What department admitted me?"
Scarlett had already prepared herself for this conversation countless times in her head, but now that he was asking directly, she still hesitated.
Just as she struggled to answer, the hospital room door opened.
Nolan's attending physician walked in.
The moment Scarlett saw him, nervousness flashed across her face. Still, she also knew Nolan was a doctor himself, and there was no way to hide the truth from him for long, so she quietly stepped aside.
After entering the room, the physician performed a routine examination.
Once he finished, Nolan spoke before the doctor even had the chance to.
"Just tell me. What's wrong with me?"
Since Nolan had asked outright, the physician could only explain everything honestly, piece by piece.
Scarlett stood quietly beside the bed the entire time, watching Nolan's expression carefully. She could clearly see the emotions shifting across his face, from calm, to shock, and finally back to forced composure again.
When the doctor finished speaking, Nolan only nodded faintly. "Got it."
Hearing that, Nolan leaned back against the raised hospital bed with a bitter smile. "The way you're saying that almost makes me wish they'd actually find something wrong with me."
Scarlett quickly shook her head. "Nothing's going to happen."
She was a doctor too, so she understood exactly how terrifying leukemia could be. But until the final diagnosis came back, there was still hope.
Not long after that, the attending physician finally left the room.
Once the door closed behind him, silence settled between Scarlett and Nolan. Neither of them spoke for a very long time.
Eventually, Scarlett tested the waters carefully. "Nolan, are you hungry?"
Nolan originally wanted to say no, but looking at Scarlett somehow softened his entire heart. Even his voice trembled slightly when he answered.
"Yeah."
Scarlett stood up immediately. "I'll go grab you something to eat."
But before she could leave, Nolan reached out and caught her wrist.
"It's freezing outside," he said quietly. "Don't go. I'm not hungry anymore."
Almost the moment he finished speaking, the hospital room door opened from the outside.
A man walked in.
It was Damian.
