The moment Thomas's name came up, Nolan let out a heavy sigh. "Mr. Newman always says I'm too stubborn, the kind of guy who keeps pushing forward even when everything's falling apart, but Scarlett," he said as he looked at her with reddened eyes, "I really can't see anyone else anymore."
Scarlett lowered her gaze, guilt pressing hard against her chest. "Nolan, I'm sorry."
Nolan bit down on his lip so hard it nearly lost color, and when he spoke again, his voice was already rough with emotion. "No, I'm the one who should be sorry. I just wasn't enough to make you love me."
Seeing him like this only made Scarlett feel worse. After a long silence, she finally forced herself to say what she knew had to be said. "Nolan, I don't think we should see each other anymore."
Nolan's head snapped up immediately, panic flashing across his face as though he hadn't expected those words at all. He stared at her in disbelief. "You mean that?"
Scarlett slowly stood from the couch. "Yeah. Take care of yourself."
The second the words left her mouth, she turned toward the door without hesitation, but before she could leave, Nolan suddenly rose to his feet and wrapped his arms tightly around her from behind. His chin pressed into the hollow of her shoulder as his voice cracked with desperation.
"Scarlett, how am I supposed to be okay without you? You're tearing me apart."
He held her so tightly that his chest was pressed firmly against her back, his arms locking around her waist as though he wanted to pull her into himself and never let go, yet no matter how tightly he held on, she still felt impossibly far away.
Nolan buried his face against her neck, and when she stayed silent, he lowered his voice into a near plea. "Please don't do this to me, okay?"
His pleading made Scarlett's eyes sting. After a long moment, she slowly reached down and pried his hands away from her waist.
She didn't say another word.
She simply walked out of the bedroom.
Because she knew that if she softened now, all she would do was give Nolan more hope to hold onto.
Nolan watched helplessly as she slipped free from his embrace. His hand instinctively lifted as though he wanted to stop her, but in the end, he forced himself not to.
She was free. She had never belonged to anyone.
If he tried to keep her by force, he'd only disgust himself.
His hand remained suspended awkwardly in midair while he stood there frozen in place. His eyes were bloodshot, filled with grief and helplessness that refused to fade, and when tears finally rolled down his face, a sharp pain suddenly tightened around his chest so violently that he struggled to breathe.
In only a few seconds, all the color drained from his face.
His body finally gave out beneath him, and he collapsed onto the floor before blacking out completely.
By the time Nolan fainted, Scarlett had already made it downstairs and reached the front entrance. When she realized he hadn't chased after her, she actually felt relieved.
The moment she stepped outside the villa and lifted a hand to call for a rideshare, a black Maserati pulled up directly in front of her.
Scarlett instinctively shook her head. "No, I was thinking maybe I should head..."
Before she could finish, Damian cut in smoothly. "Come with me. Just stay for a little while."
Then he told the driver to start moving.
When the car finally pulled up outside Langley Group headquarters, Damian stepped out first before helping Scarlett from the car. The two of them had barely entered the lobby side by side when a hurried voice suddenly called out behind them.
"Damian!"
Scarlett turned toward the sound and saw Kylie standing there.
Unlike her usual polished appearance, today she wore a baseball cap, a face mask, and loose athletic clothes. Even with most of her face hidden, though, the redness around her eyes was impossible to miss. She had obviously been crying.
Damian looked at her coolly. "Do you need something?"
Kylie lifted the brim of her cap slightly, and when she spoke, her tone sounded almost pleading. "Can I talk to you alone for a minute?"
Hearing that, Damian instinctively glanced at Scarlett before looking back at Kylie again.
"Scarlett's my wife," he said evenly. "She's not a stranger, so whatever you want to say, say it here."
