Damian's voice came out rough. "Nathan."
Nathan snapped back to attention, furrowing his brow as he looked over. "Yeah?"
Damian kept his tone low. "I need to step out to make a few calls. Can you stay with Scarlett for a bit?"
Nathan gave a quiet nod. "Sure."
There wasn't a trace of a smile on Damian's face—it was clear something was weighing on him.
Nathan didn't press further. He simply watched in silence as Damian walked out onto the balcony.
Damian slid the glass door shut behind him, locking it against the chill outside. Facing the brisk night air, he pulled out his phone and placed a call.
As soon as the line connected, Damian got straight to the point. "Any updates on who was behind this?"
Brett's voice came through. "Still digging, Mr. Langley, but we're following a couple of leads."
Damian's reply was firm. "I want whoever did this found by tonight."
"Understood, Mr. Langley."
Once the call ended, Damian lit another cigarette.
The wind up on the balcony was sharp and unrelenting, cutting through from every direction.
The swirl of smoke from his cigarette was snatched apart by the gusts, vanishing almost as soon as it left his lips.
Just then, a soft knock came from the glass door behind him.
Damian turned. Seeing Violet standing there, he quickly moved over and unlocked it.
Noticing the tendril of smoke drifting toward her, he immediately stubbed the cigarette out, then tucked the unfinished butt discreetly into his palm.
Violet caught the small gesture and offered a gentle smile. "You must be hungry," she said softly. "Come inside—we can fix you something to eat."
"I'm alright for now," Damian replied automatically. "How's Scarlett? Is she doing any better?"
Violet nodded. "A little shaken, but otherwise she's okay."
Damian let out a low breath. "Good."
"She's asking for you," Violet added, her smile warming. "Probably has something to tell you."
Damian tilted his head, glancing past her into the bedroom.
The whole family had gathered around, but he couldn't spot Scarlett among them.
Noticing his look, Violet stepped aside. "Go ahead. She's waiting."
Damian slipped his phone away and nodded without hesitation. "Alright."
With that, he slid the door open and stepped back into the room.
As he entered, Nathan cleared his throat. "Dad, Mom—Clara and Eric are still downstairs. Let's go check on them."
Scarlett watched him, taking in the careful, attentive way he moved. She nodded quietly. "Okay."
He fed her slowly, spoonful by spoonful, until about halfway through, his phone buzzed on the bedside table.
Damian glanced down. Seeing Brett's name flash across the screen, his expression tightened.
He looked back at Scarlett. "I need to take this."
Scarlett nodded. "Go ahead."
Once she agreed, Damian set the oatmeal bowl carefully back on the nightstand.
Then he made his way out to the balcony again.
As he slid the door open, Scarlett's eyes stayed fixed on his back.
Damian turned away from her, answering the call with his voice low.
Scarlett couldn't see his face, but she could faintly hear the sharp, angry edge in his tone.
The conversation didn't last long.
When he came back inside and closed the door behind him, his expression was carefully calm, giving nothing away.
He sat back down beside her, taking her hand once more. "I have to head out for a little while," he said, his voice tender.
Scarlett didn't hesitate. "Where are you going?"
