"As for Mrs. Chase's brother, he had a kid with the housekeeper's daughter but refused to acknowledge her because of her low status."
Seth Harcourt left no room for mercy, exposing all their dirty laundry.
It was terribly rude.
Noreen Gilmore could easily tell the man was drowning in jealousy.
Feeling a little playful, she deliberately provoked him. "Status and capability don't matter to me. It's fine if they're bankrupt. I have millions of dollars anyway, so I can easily afford to support a man."
"Plus, I'd get to be a mother without going through labor. How great is that?"
Seth's fingers paused for a second.
He looked up at her, his voice dropping low. "Did you really take a liking to him?"
Noreen didn't even bat an eye, her tone as casual as if she were discussing the weather. "I'm free anyway. Meeting him wouldn't hurt."
With a sharp click, he twisted the bottle cap back on, using a bit more force than necessary.
The air grew tense, and his jaw clenched tightly, as if he were on the verge of losing it.
But just then, his gaze locked with hers.
In those eyes that were always smiling, his reflection was crystal clear, along with a hint of unconcealed mischief, like a cat that had toyed with a mouse long enough and was now waiting for it to jump.
Seth's breath hitched for a moment before he let out a low chuckle, his tone laced with exasperation. "You did that on purpose."
Noreen finally looked up at him, the corners of her lips curling. "What do you think?"
In just a few short minutes, he had been completely at her mercy.
He was already anxious enough about not having an official title as her partner, yet she still teased him so mercilessly.
Seth was frustrated but completely helpless against her.
Noreen touched up her lipstick, making sure her makeup was flawless before preparing to head back to the banquet.
But Seth suddenly closed the distance between them, planting a hand on the edge of the sofa beside her and trapping her in his space.
Noreen instinctively leaned back, meeting his gaze. Recognizing the dangerous glint in his eyes, she quickly pressed her hands against his chest to maintain some distance.
