My Second Chance Mate is a Barbarian (Sera and Fenris) novel Chapter 180

Elara

Aldric Valdris didn't walk like the other wolves. The guards, the dealers, the "handlers"—they all moved with a certain jerky, aggressive twitch. Aldric moved like the floor was a privilege he was allowing to exist. He was dressed in clothes that probably cost more than my entire village combined, his face a mask of bored, aristocratic perfection.

The man in charge of us—a greasy, thick-necked wolf who looked like he enjoyed his job a little too much—scurried over to Aldric, bowing so low he nearly hit his head on the concrete.

"King Aldric," the man chirped, his voice vibrating with a desperate need to please. "We have the latest batch from the coastal raids. High quality. Mostly young, mostly healthy. We can send them to the processing centers tonight. Put them to work in the factories or the mines."

Aldric didn't look at him. He scanned the rows of women, his eyes moving with clinical detachment. "Send them," he said, his voice a smooth, low baritone. "I don't have time for the dregs."

He turned to leave, his long cloak sweeping the dust.

"Wait, my Lord!" the handler called out, stepping forward. He looked nervous, like he was about to spill a secret he wasn't supposed to have. "You... you made a specific request. A human female. For the court."

Aldric stopped. He didn't turn around immediately. I saw the way his shoulders tensed, a flicker of lethal irritation crossing his face. The handler had just outed the King’s private perversions in front of a warehouse full of slaves and guards. I didn't see that handler again after that day. I’m pretty sure Aldric had him fed to something hungry.
