My Second Chance Mate is a Barbarian (Sera and Fenris) novel Chapter 170

Irina

"Don't be long."

I felt a pang in my chest. A sharp, stinging needle of jealousy. I couldn't be jealous of my own daughter, could I? But I was. I saw the way he looked at her. He didn't look at her like a tool. He looked at her with a longing that I hadn't seen in a man’s eyes since... well, maybe never. Even Torin’s hunger had been a weak thing, a shadow of this.

Fenris gave me one last warning look, then spoke to Mina.

"Stick around until she’s done," he told the girl.

Mina nodded. Fenris turned on his heel and left the room, his heavy boots thumping down the corridor until the sound faded.

Now it was just the three of us.

Sera stood there for a second, her fingers touching her lips where he had kissed her. She looked like she was trying to pull the "Luna" mask back on.

"Mina," Sera called out.

The girl didn't respond at first. She was staring at me, her eyes flat and unreadable. Sera sighed.

Sera swallowed, her throat moving in a hard gulp. "Mina. Bring the record."

I watched as Mina shuffled toward one of the trunks in the corner. She pulled out a small, jagged piece of stone. No, not stone. A recording crystal.

My heart hit the back of my throat. Crystals like that were rare, expensive, and mostly used by the Southern spies. How the hell did they have one in a place like this?

Sera came close to me. She knelt down, bringing her face level with mine. She smiled at me, but it was a nasty thing—a sharp, predatory curve of the lips that told me she was about to gut me.

"You see," Sera said, her voice a soft, dangerous purr. "When I was busy enjoying my Alpha... I made sure you were sorted, Mother."

I let out a long, shaky sigh. Of course she knew.

"I'm not mad," Sera continued. She leaned in closer, the scent of Fenris still clinging to her. "I promised I wouldn't hurt you. I don't even care who you fuck."

Mina stepped forward and passed the crystal to her. Sera held it between her thumb and forefinger, the facets catching the firelight.

"But you should listen to this," Sera said.
