“It’s in you.”

I sat there, pinned to that wooden vanity chair, my breath coming in shallow, jagged hitches. The knife was still buried deep in my side. He wasn’t twisting it anymore, but he hadn't pulled it out either. I could feel every cold, sharp millimeter of the steel inside me. It was a hot, vibrating ache that pulsed with my heartbeat. Every time I tried to shift, even just to draw a fuller breath, the edge of the blade scraped against my rib, sending a fresh spike of white-hot agony straight to my skull.

I stayed perfectly still. It was the only way to manage the pain.

Kark stood over me, his massive, scarred chest heaving. He wasn’t looking at my face anymore. He was looking at Torin. Even this barbarian looked unsettled. He had a smirk on his face, but it was a cold, clinical thing.

Torin was a ruin on the floor. He was curled near the bedpost, snot and blood smeared across his doublet. His eyes were wide—so wide I could see the frantic, trembling whites around his pupils. The idiot had already figured it out. He was smart enough for that, at least. But he was looking at me like he was waiting for me to tell him it was a joke. Like he expected me to laugh and tell him I was just lying to save my own skin.

His mind wasn't failing him, though. The truth was too loud to ignore.

"Irina..." Torin stammered, his voice a shaky, broken thread. "What... what are you talking about? What do you mean it’s in me?"

I wheezed, my head sagging back against the frame of the chair. I was exhausted. The loss of blood was starting to make the edges of the room turn grey and fuzzy. The only reason I was still breathing was the wolf blood in my veins; a human woman would have bled out ten minutes ago. Kark knew that. That’s why he wasn't giving me any space to breathe. He was letting the biology do the work for him.
