Chapter 200: The Invitation

[Jake’s POV]

The summons came at midnight, exactly two hours after we dropped the collection envelopes off at the Golden Koi’s counting room.

Ethan and I were sitting in the dimly lit kitchen of our safehouse, nursing bruised ribs and drinking cheap local beer, when the heavy, reinforced door rattled with three sharp knocks. Ethan tensed, his hand dropping toward the kitchen knife on the counter, but I shook my head. The Black Lotus wouldn’t knock.

I opened the door. Standing in the hallway was Gao, the scarred enforcer who had punched me in the stomach on our first night in Macau. He wasn’t flanked by guards this time. He stood alone, his dark eyes sweeping over my torn canvas jacket and the faint bruising on my knuckles.

"The Matriarch wants to see you," Gao said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble. He didn’t look at Ethan. "Just you, Noah."

"It’s late," I said, playing the role of the exhausted runner. "Can’t it wait until the morning collection?"

Gao stepped closer, the smell of stale tobacco and garlic washing over me. "When Madam Bai calls, you answer. Now."

I didn’t argue. I grabbed my jacket, gave Ethan a subtle nod to stay put, and followed Gao out into the sweltering Macau night.

We didn’t go to the back office of the mahjong parlor. Gao led me past the Golden Koi, down a narrow, unmarked alleyway, and up a rusted fire escape that clung to the side of a towering, brutalist apartment complex. We climbed to the top floor, the air growing thinner and cooler as we ascended above the smog layer of the Outer Harbour.

Gao punched a code into a heavy steel security door. It hissed open, revealing a space that completely defied the poverty of the streets below.

It was a sprawling, open-concept penthouse. The floors were polished black marble, reflecting the soft, ambient light of the city skyline visible through floor-to-ceiling windows. The furniture was minimalist, expensive, and arranged with meticulous precision. The air smelled of sandalwood and expensive jasmine tea.

"Wait here," Gao grunted, gesturing to the center of the room before turning and walking back out the door. The heavy steel locked behind him with a definitive *clack*.

I stood in the center of the marble floor, my eyes systematically mapping the room. Two hidden cameras in the corners. A reinforced panic room door disguised as a bookshelf. A faint, rhythmic hum coming from the air vents—white noise generators to prevent laser microphones from picking up conversations.

Madam Bai wasn’t just a triad boss. She was a paranoid, highly intelligent operator who understood the value of absolute security.

"You bleed well, Noah Reed."

The voice came from the shadows near the panoramic windows. Madam Bai stepped into the light, holding a delicate porcelain teacup. She was wearing a silk robe, deep emerald green, embroidered with gold thread. The silk clung to her curves, the fabric shifting fluidly with every step she took. Her dark hair was down, cascading over her shoulders in soft waves. Without the rigid, traditional updo she wore in the parlor, she looked softer, more vulnerable.

But her eyes were just as sharp, just as calculating.

"I try not to bleed at all, Madam Bai," I replied, keeping my voice respectful but firm. "But sometimes the street doesn’t give you a choice."

She walked toward me, her bare feet making no sound on the marble floor. She stopped three feet away, close enough that I could smell the intoxicating, musky scent of her perfume. It was a deliberate invasion of personal space, a test to see if I would step back.

I held my ground.

"Three Black Lotus enforcers," she murmured, taking a slow sip of her tea. Her dark eyes locked onto mine over the rim of the cup. "My floor manager told me what happened at Zhang’s stall. He said you fought like a cornered animal. He said you used boiling oil and a wooden handle to break three men who have been terrorizing the Outer Harbour for months."

"They were shaking down your vendors," I said simply. "I was protecting your investment."

"You were protecting your own life," she corrected, lowering the teacup. "But you did it with a level of efficiency that is... uncommon for a logistics consultant’s brother."

She began to circle me, her steps slow and measured. I kept my eyes forward, refusing to track her movements, projecting the calm discipline of a soldier.

"I ran a background check on you, Noah Reed," she said, her voice floating from behind me. "The Canadian databases confirm your identity. They confirm your brother’s gambling debts. But there are gaps. Large, unexplained gaps in your employment history. You move like a man who has been trained to kill, but you fight like a man who is desperate to hide that training."

"We are not so different, Noah," she whispered, her fingers lingering on my skin. "I inherited the Golden Koi from my husband when he was murdered by the Black Lotus five years ago. The other triad bosses thought I would fold. They thought a woman could not hold the Outer Harbour. I had to become a monster to survive. I had to burn away everything soft inside me."

She dropped her hand, taking a step back, the mask of the ruthless Matriarch sliding back into place. But the crack in her armor was there. I had seen it.

"The Black Lotus is making their move," she said, her voice hardening. "Chen was just the beginning. The incident at Zhang’s stall tonight proves they are no longer hiding in the shadows. They want my territory, and they want my life."

She walked over to her desk, picking up a heavy, suppressed Heckler & Koch USP tactical pistol. She turned and held it out to me, grip first.

"I have dozens of soldiers, Noah," she said, her eyes burning with a dark, absolute intensity. "But they are loyal to the coin, not to me. If the Black Lotus offers them more, they will turn. I need someone who has nowhere else to go. I need a ghost."

I looked at the weapon, then up at her.

"You are no longer a runner," Madam Bai declared. "You are my personal shadow. You go where I go. You see what I see. You protect me from the Four Dragons, and in return, I will give you the wealth and power your country stripped from you."

I reached out, my fingers wrapping around the textured grip of the pistol. The weight of the weapon felt perfect in my hand, a familiar, lethal extension of my own will.

"I accept, Madam Bai," I said, my voice a low, dangerous rumble.

"Call me Li," she murmured, a faint, genuine smile touching her lips. "If you are going to die for me, Noah, you should at least know my name."

I bowed my head slightly, slipping the pistol into the holster inside my jacket.

The infiltration was over. The conquest had begun.
