"He said it’s for cancer."
’Cancer?’
The hand Brandon Jacobs was holding his phone with trembled.
’It can’t be.’
’Elsa seems so normal, so beautiful. She’s a doctor herself—how could she possibly have cancer? He must have it wrong!’
"Does that friend of yours even know how to talk? Just forget I ever asked!"
Even though Brandon Jacobs had chewed him out, a seed of doubt had been planted in his mind.
After hanging up on his friend, the more he thought about it, the more anxious he became. He couldn’t resist sending the photo to Damien Vaughn.
"Vaughn, do me a favor and show this picture to the professor. Ask him to see what this medicine is and what it’s used for."
The professor had just finished surgery and was chatting with Damien Vaughn in a hospital room. Damien casually showed him the photo.
The professor’s expression grew solemn. "Who sent this to you? The person who sent it doesn’t recognize this medicine?"
"What’s wrong? Is there a problem with this medicine?"
"Er, it’s nothing. It’s just that there’s no name written on it, so I can’t be certain at the moment."
Although the professor didn’t say so directly, Damien Vaughn could clearly sense his evasiveness.
After seeing the professor out, he called Brandon Jacobs.
"Where are you? I told you to keep a close eye on her so nothing would happen, didn’t I? Why are you researching medicine all of a sudden? Brandon Jacobs, don’t cause trouble for me!"
Brandon Jacobs felt like he was going to die of anger from dealing with those two siblings.
’One after another, why is everyone so hostile toward me?’
"Why don’t you video call me and see for yourself before you say another word, man? Your sister was at a bar drinking for hours, and I just dragged her home. You’re yelling at me, she’s yelling at me... Did I owe you two in a past life or something?"
"You’re with her? Then why are you asking me about the medicine?"
Brandon Jacobs almost blurted out that Elsa was the one taking it.
’But, with Elsa’s foul temper, if she doesn’t want anyone else to know...’
"She hit it off with some guy at the bar and almost left with him. I saw him taking this medicine and was afraid he had some kind of hidden disease, so I stopped her. What in the world is this medicine for? Did you ask?"
So that’s what happened. Damien Vaughn breathed a sigh of relief.
"In any case, it’s not for anything good; the professor wouldn’t say directly. Just watch her closely. Don’t let her go to the bar again. If she absolutely refuses to listen, call me."
When Brandon Jacobs heard him say it wasn’t for "anything good," his heart plummeted.
After he hung up, Elsa walked out wrapped in a bath towel.
He had seen her figure many times, but this was the first time he’d seen her under the bright lights with her hair pinned up, her slender shoulders bare.
Because she was so slender, her collarbones protruded. She was practically skin and bones. Her neck looked so long, and even the bones in her elbows were clearly visible...
Brandon Jacobs hadn’t wanted to associate her with cancer, but...
Seeing her return to the room and lie down on the bed, still wearing her shower cap, Brandon Jacobs went to the bathroom, unplugged the hair dryer, and followed her.
"Get up. Dry your hair before you go to sleep."
Western habits aren’t as particular as oriental ones. Going barefoot, drinking cold water, and sleeping with wet hair are all perfectly normal, so Elsa completely ignored him.
Brandon Jacobs couldn’t stand to see her abuse her body like that. He pulled her to the side of the bed so her head was hanging over the edge, undid her shower cap, and knelt beside her to start drying her hair.
He even lectured her as he did it.
"I don’t know what they teach in Western medical textbooks, but in the orient, this is common knowledge for everyone, not just doctors. Sleeping with wet hair gives you headaches. And you should always wear slippers, no matter the season, or a chill can enter your body through your feet and cause a lot of harm. Elsa, you’re so young. You still have so many places to go and so many things to see. You should take better care of yourself."
Perhaps it was because the way he massaged her scalp as he dried her hair was too comfortable, or perhaps because she was simply tired, but Elsa didn’t argue with Brandon Jacobs.
Once her hair was dry, he helped her lie back down properly. Then, Brandon Jacobs took a quick shower and got into bed as well.
They were close enough to touch, yet a galaxy seemed to lie between them.
